Harold M. Bruce

Harold M. Bruce, 86, of Powhatan, died April 1, 2014, at Lawrence Hall Nursing Center.

James Dean Fowler

James Dean "Jimmy" Fowler, 73, of Alicia, died March 28, 2014, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

Born Aug. 29, 1940, in the Hopewell community, he was a farmer and a member of Main Street Church of Christ. He served as a board member of the Clover Bend School for many years.

He was preceded in death by his parents, George W. and Norma Muriel Smith Fowler.

Survivors include two sons, Scott Fowler and wife Rhonda, Clover Bend, and Mark A. Fowler, Atlanta; a daughter, Angela Barnes and husband Mitch, Jonesboro; a brother, Billy Fowler, Pine Bluff; two sisters, Norma Butts, Walnut Ridge, and Anna Sanders, North Little Rock; and two grandchildren, Whitney Blackburn and Tyler Fowler.

A memorial service was held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Main Street Church of Christ in Walnut Ridge with Rob Combs officiating. Cox-Fears Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.

John Garcia Sr.

John Garcia Sr., 97, of Enterprise, Ala., died March 31, 2014, in Enterprise.

Born Feb. 17, 1917, in San Louis Rey, Calif., he was the son of Nickolas and Carolina Ojeda Garcia. He retired from the U.S. Navy in 1959 at San Diego and moved to Jacksonville, Fla. In 1972, he moved to Arkansas, where he lived until moving to Enterprise is 2012.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Janice Garcia; and a daughter, Darlene Haxton.

Survivors include four sons, Bill Garcia and wife Cindy, Ft. Walton Beach, Fla., Bob Garcia and wife Leah, Canyonville, Ore, John Garcia Jr. and wife Casey, Cleveland, Texas, and David Garcia, Dublin, Ohio; a daughter, Elaine Ridenour and husband Charles, Enterprise, Ala.; 10 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.

Funeral is Saturday at 2 p.m. at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Annieville with Bro. Jerry Clements officiating. Burial will be in Smithville Cemetery under the direction of Bryan Funeral Home.

Visitation is Saturday from noon until time of the service.

Karen Gross

Karen LaVaughn Gross, 53, of Dallas, Ga., formerly of Little Rock and Nashville, Tenn., died March 23, 2014, at Paulding Hospital in Dallas, Ga.

Born Dec. 6, 1960, in Little Rock, she was a teacher at Mount Paran Christian School and a member of West Ridge Church in Hiram, Ga.

Survivors include a daughter, Lauren Gross, Cleveland, Tenn.; her parents, Cecil Leslie and LaVerne Vaughn Benton; and a sister, Cecilia Benton, Nashville, Tenn.

Funeral was Friday at 11 a.m. at Cherokee Baptist Church in Cherokee Village with Larry White officiating. Burial was in Hersperger Cemetery at Cherokee Village under the direction of Cox-Fears Funeral Home.

Pallbearers were Steve Vaughn, Royce McClure, Leonard Smith, Bristol May, Cecilia Benton and Lauren Gross.

A celebration of her life will be held at Mount Paran Christian School in Kennesaw, Ga.

Rheta Faye Hellemeyer

Rheta Faye Hellemeyer, 68, of Warrenton, Mo., died March 28, 2014, at St. Joseph's Health Center in St. Charles, Mo.

Born Dec. 19, 1945, in Pocahontas, she was the daughter of Chestley Washington and Glenda Marie Etchason Matthews. Rheta loved spending time with her grandchildren, loved flowers, fishing and bowling. She loved to travel, visiting all 50 states and traveling the world. She was a woodcrafter, antique collector, jewelry collector and gardener. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Gene Matthews; and three sisters, Freda Matthews, Shirley Melton and Mary Lindsey.

Survivors include her husband, Jerald "Jerry" Hellemeyer; five sons, Jimmy DeWayne Snyder and wife Yuyang, Danny Ray Snyder and wife Sandy and Randy Snyder and wife Diana, all of Warrenton, Mo., Michael Hellemeyer, Robertsville, Mo., and Jayce Hellemeyer and significant other Tom; five daughters, Donna Duckett and husband Fabian Zamora, Wright City, Mo., Christene Manning, Jonesboro, Susan Brooks and husband Kevin, Howe, Texas, Lori Lafferty and husband Neil, Fayette, Mo., and Tracy Owens; two brothers, David Matthews and wife Carla, and Bobby Matthews, all of Pocahontas; eight sisters, Betty Sue Lynn and husband Ron, Judy Brandon, Lena Wells and husband Ronnie and Rosalie Matthews, all of Pocahontas, Patsy Richardson and husband Delynn, Castle Hayne, N.C., Peggy Kemry, Warrenton, Mo., Carol Rawls and husband Danny, Paragould, Sharon Townsend and husband Tate, Maynard, and Anita Huddleston, O'Fallon, Mo.; 18 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren.

Graveside service was Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Brockett Cemetery in Pocahontas with Gary Moore officiating. Cox-Fears Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.

James David Hugg

James David Hugg, 65, of Jonesboro, formerly of Lawrence County, died March 23, 2014, at the Flo and Phil Jones Hospice House.

Born Aug. 16, 1948, he served in the U.S. Air Force and was a supervisor with Pace Industries (B&C Diecast Division). He was a member of the Brookland Church of Christ.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Elbert Otis and Hayath Doyle Hugg.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Hugg; two sons, Eric Hardin and wife Mary, Gassville, and Gary Hardin and wife Shanda, Salem; two daughters, Heather Hugg, Jonesboro, and Elizabeth Herzig and husband Dalton, Little Rock; five sisters, Roberta Brady and husband Coleman, Sherwood, Oma Penn, Mountain Home, Ruth Whitmire, Strawberry, Carolyn Trusty, Bryant, and Alice Harris, Lynn; and two grandchildren.

Funeral was Wednesday, March 26, at 1 p.m. at Roller-Farmers Union Funeral Home in Jonesboro with John Mark Wilson officiating. Burial was in Penn Cemetery at Strawberry.

Pallbearers were Mark Trusty, Anthony Harris, Todd Brady, Brian Brady, Scott Whitmire, Craig Whitmire, Jeremy Penn and Tim Trusty. Honorary pallbearers were Mark Mihm, Rick Bounds, Brandon Horn, Roger Penn, Sam Bollinger Jr., Ricky Clem, Tom Doyle, John Doyle, Schaad Doyle, Sam Massey, Lanny Hugg and the Strawberry High School Class of 1966.

Carmen Stayton

Carmen Stayton, 65, of Walnut Ridge, died March 31, 2014, of injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

Born Nov. 22, 1948, in Lynn, she was a lifelong resident of Lawrence County and a retired nurse at NEA Baptist Hospital.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Stayton; her parents, John and Vonnie Garrett Adams; and a sister, Eyvonne Burks.

Survivors include two stepsons, William Shane Stayton, West Fork, and Benny Stayton, Elkins; three sisters, Mary Adams, Walnut Ridge, and Jeannie King and Tonia Goad, both of Jonesboro; a brother, John Adams, Walnut Ridge; a grandchild; and several great-grandchildren.

Visitation is today from 6:30-7:30 p.m. at House-Gregg Funeral Home. No funeral services are scheduled.

Darrell Steele

Darrell Steele, 68, of Alicia, died March 30, 2014, at the Flo and Phil Jones Hospice House in Jonesboro.

Born Aug. 8, 1945, in Clover Bend, he was a lifelong resident of Lawrence County. He was a farmer and worked in the trucking business. He attended New Life Cathedral in Hoxie.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Sid and Christina Golden Steele; two sisters, Mary L. Phillips, Glenda Davidson; and Ralph and Wanda Steele.

Survivors include his wife, Cora Steele; four daughters, Tammy Gates and Charlene Raby, both of Hoxie, and Angie Steele and Casey Steele, both of Walnut Ridge; three sons, Chris Steele and Darrell Steele Jr., both of Walnut Ridge, and Richard Steele, West Plains, Mo.; a notable son, Greg Coats, Smithville; three sisters, Freda Phillips, Maryville, Ill., Carol Gray, Houston, and Peggy McMillon, Walnut Ridge; 13 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral is today at 10 a.m. at House-Gregg Funeral Home with Bob McMillon and Chuck Fitzgerald officiating. Burial will be in Strangers Home Cemetery.

Ovada Lea Zipp

Ovada Lea Zipp, 79, of Rockford, Ill., passed away Sunday, March 30, 2014, at OSF St. Anthony's Hospital with her family by her side.

Ovada was born on April 1, 1934, in Walnut Ridge, the daughter of Ezra and Georgia Cox Huffman.

She married Charles J. Zipp on July 15, 1957, and Charles preceded her in death on Sept. 14, 2010. Ovada loved crafting, gardening and spending time with her grandkids.

Ovada is survived by her daughters: Susan (Geno) Paluzzi, and Nancy Zipp; grandchildren Stacey (Christopher) Haas and Corey (Theresa) Williams; great-grandchildren Mackenzi and Cody Haas, Erika Villani; a brother, Murray (Mickey) Huffman; an aunt, Margaret Watkins; and several nieces and nephews.

Ovada was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one brother and her twin sister.

Memorials may be made to the family for a memorial to be established later.

A service to celebrate Ovada's life will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at Sunset Funeral Home in Machesney Park, Ill. Visitation will be Friday, April 4, from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Entombment will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
