WR opens season with wins
The Walnut Ridge Bobcats opened the 2014 baseball season with a 20-6 drubbing of Manila on March 10.
The visiting Lions scored two runs in the top of the first inning, but Walnut Ridge answered with four runs in the bottom half of the inning and stretched the lead to 5-2 with a single run in the second.
After Manila closed to within 5-3, the Bobcats took control of the game with a six-run third inning to make the score 11-3.
The Lions trimmed the deficit to 11-6 with a run in the fourth inning and two in the fifth, only to see the Cats plate three runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 14-6 lead.
Walnut Ridge then scored six runs in the bottom of the sixth to end the contest via the run rule.
Several Bobcats put up big offensive numbers, led by Baron Estes, who went 5-for-5 with four RBIs and scored a run. Cash Lee went 3-for-4 and scored five runs. Lane Kennedy was 1-for-3, with four RBIs and scored two runs. Layne Ditto was 1-for-4, with four RBIs and scored a run.
Cole Hicks had a hit, an RBI and scored four runs. Treyton Johnson had a hit and two runs. Will Weir had a hit, an RBI and three runs, and Drake Smelser scored two runs.
Ditto earned the win on the mound. He allowed three unearned runs on two hits, while registering seven strikeouts in three innings of work.
Weir pitched the final three innings, allowing two earned runs and four hits, with four strikeouts.
The Bobcats improved to 2-0 on the season with a 15-0 shutout win over 2A-2 conference foe Cotter on March 12.
Weir led Walnut Ridge's offense, with two doubles and three RBIs. Ditto, Kennedy and Johnson each had two hits.
Estes allowed just one hit and recorded nine strikeouts in the three-inning contest.
