Chamber to host
Agri Tech training
One of the many goals of the Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce for 2014 was the formation or re-formation of an Agriculture Committee to recognize agriculture and its role and impact in our local economy.
Committee member Lila Floyd said the committee quickly identified that the county has the distinction of possessing many areas of agriculture to consider.
"The county's production ranges from cattle and poultry in the western part to row crops such as peanuts, milo, soybeans, corn and rice in the eastern section," she said. "One aspect of farming that is changing in all of these areas is the advancement of technology and the products that support these advancements."
To assist producers in understanding this new arena, the committee has combined forces with Greenway Equipment and Farm Service, Inc. to help producers understand and implement these new trends in agriculture.
A training session has been set for Tuesday, March 25, at 7 p.m., at The Venue on Main Street in Walnut Ridge. The focus will be on understanding the use of the RTK technology in regard to savings on inputs such as seed, fuel and labor.
Shad Stallings with Greenway Equipment will be the presenter. Shane Rollins with Farm Service, Inc. will offer information on variable rate soil sampling. He will discuss potential savings in fertilizer and chemical applications with this new technology, as well as accuracy in applying them. Chris Penn with Rabo Agrifinance will offer information on lending and tips on recordkeeping.
"The committee hopes this will be the first in a series of meetings and training sessions that will assist our agricultural community," Floyd said.
There is no charge to attend this meeting. For more information call Frema Gipson at 886-4042 or cell at 870-926-1663.
