The Hillcrest Lady Screamin' Eagles defeated Armorel 43-29 in the first round of the 1A Region 2 Basketball Tournament at Brockwell on Thursday. The win clinched a spot in the 1A state tournament for the Lady Screamin' Eagles.
Hillcrest led 11-6 after one quarter and stretched the lead to 24-14 at the end of the first half. Armorel trimmed Hillcrest's lead to 30-25 in the third quarter, but the Lady Eagles finished strong, outscoring the Lady Tigers 13-4 in the final quarter to pull away for the win.
Katelyn Richey scored a game-high 21 points for Hillcrest.
In the first round of the senior boys bracket, Armorel scored five unanswered points in the final 20 seconds to hand Hillcrest a season-ending 67-66 loss.
With the Screamin' Eagles holding a 66-62 lead, Armorel's Dallas Nicholson hit a three-pointer to bring the Tigers to within 66-65. Nicholson then deflected Hillcrest's inbounds pass to teammate Lane Finley. Finley passed to Peyton Brown for the winning layup with under 10 seconds to play. Hillcrest inbounded the ball and got off a final shot, which was off the mark.
Hillcrest's Colman Evans scored 23 of his game-high 29 points in the first half.
Following their opening round victory, the Lady Screamin' Eagles faced host Izard County Consolidated in the semifinal round on Friday.
ICC led 15-11 in the first quarter and stretched the lead to 35-24 at the end of the second period.
The Lady Eagles used a strong effort in the second half to trail 43-41 at the end of the third quarter and closed to within a single point, 46-45 early in the final period. ICC answered Hillcrest's rally with a 22-11 run to end the game and move into the finals with a 68-56 victory.
Richey again led Hillcrest with 19 points, while Natalie Glenn reached double figures with 10 points. Caitlin Whitmire scored nine points, and Stacy Maxwell added eight. Carly Otwell contributed six points, while Kaitlyn Guerin and Durham had two points apiece.
The semifinal loss sent the Lady Screamin' Eagles to a matchup against the Norfork Lady Panthers for third place on Saturday.
Norfork raced to an early 16-2 lead en route to a 65-48 victory.
The Lady Panthers led 21-6 after one quarter, 32-15 at halftime and 47-31 entering the fourth quarter.
Otwell led the Lady Eagles with 12 points, and Caitlin Whitmire added 10. Richey had six points, and Maddie Whitmire chipped in three points. Glenn, Baley Bell, Rachael Durham, Meridith Helms and Jody Hoggard each scored two points, and Guerin added one point.
