Lady Cats advance to regionals
The Walnut Ridge and Sloan-Hendrix senior high basketball teams competed in the 2A-2 District Tournament last week at Cotter.
The Walnut Ridge boys and girls teams each picked up first-round wins over host Cotter on Feb. 17.
Four Lady Bobcats scored in double figures, as Walnut Ridge cruised to a 60-21 victory over the Lady Warriors. Brianna Nunley led the way with 13 points, followed by Allyson McQuay with 11. Hannah Massey and Anna Bland each scored 10 points.
The Walnut Ridge boys had a tougher time, outlasting the home team for a 67-59 win. The Bobcats led 29-27 at halftime and 43-38 after three quarters.
Kenzie Flippo led Walnut Ridge with 18 points. Spencer Wilson scored 11 points, and Cole Hicks added 10.
The Sloan-Hendrix senior boys saw their season end with a 67-55 loss to Pangburn.
After receiving a bye in the first round, the Sloan-Hendrix Lady Greyhounds faced Walnut Ridge in a second-round contest on Feb. 18 with a berth in the regional tournament at stake.
Walnut Ridge led 16-14 at the end of the first quarter, but the Lady Greyhounds used a second-quarter rally to surge into a 39-30 halftime lead. The Lady Cats regrouped in the second half to pull away for a 79-69 victory.
Caroline Kelley led Walnut Ridge with 32 points, while Tiye Flowers added 16.
Britney Wolfe led Sloan-Hendrix with 26 points.
The Walnut Ridge boys' season came to a close with a 66-36 loss to Salem.
Walnut Ridge faced the Cedar Ridge Lady Timberwolves in a girls semifinal game on Friday. Despite a great effort, the Lady Bobcats fell to Cedar Ridge 65-59.
The Walnut Ridge girls earned a trip to the 2A North Regional Tournament at Pangburn. The Lady Cats will play Marked Tree on Thursday at 4 p.m.
