Hillcrest's Screamin' Eagles and Lady Screamin' Eagles competed in the 1A-2 North District Tournament at Lynn last week, with each squad earning a trip to this week's 1A Region 2 Tournament at Brockwell.

First round

The Hillcrest teams swept Mammoth Spring in first-round action on Feb. 18.

Katelyn Richey poured in 27 points, and Caitlin Whitmire added 18, as the Lady Screamin' Eagles defeated Mammoth Spring 54-41.

The Lady Bears jumped out to a quick early lead of 10-2 in the first quarter, but Hillcrest began to take over in the second period and pulled into an 18-18 tie at the end of the first half. The Lady Eagles took a 33-27 lead into the fourth quarter and continued to pull away in the final period.

The boys contest went much the same way, with Mammoth Spring hanging tough for much of the game, only to see Hillcrest pull away at the end.

The Bears led 18-14 after one quarter, but the Screamin' Eagles rallied in the second period to take a 29-26 halftime lead. Hillcrest led just 54-50 heading into the fourth quarter, but outscored the Bears 20-10 in the final period to record the win.

Colman Evans led Hillcrest with 31 points, and Brad Nunnaly chipped in 16 points.

The Hillcrest girls were denied a chance to play for the district title by virtue of a 49-39 loss to Izard County Consolidated in the semifinals on Thursday.

ICC led 11-9 after one quarter, 24-16 at halftime and 36-25 at the end of the third quarter.

Richey led the Lady Eagles with 16 points, and Natalie Glenn added eight points.

The Hillcrest boys fared better against ICC in a boys semifinal game, defeating the Cougars 62-48.

The Screamin' Eagles led 11-8 at the end of the first quarter, 25-21 at halftime and 42-31 after three periods.

Evans was the top scorer for the Eagles, with 27 points, while Dyllan Nunnally had 14 points.

Boys final

The Hillcrest boys ran into a tough Norfork squad in Saturday's title game, falling to the Panthers 85-73.

Hillcrest led 22-19 at the end of the first quarter, but Norfork rallied to take a 45-37 lead into the locker room at halftime. The Panthers stretched the lead 68-55 in the third quarter and held the Screamin' Eagles at bay in the final period.

Evans scored 33 points and Randall Scott added 20 for Hillcrest.
