Lady Cats claim senior girls title
Allyson McQuay poured in 28 points, and Caroline Kelley added 20, to lead the Walnut Ridge Lady Bobcats to a 64-34 victory over Hoxie's Lady Mustangs in the senior girls final of the 2014 Lawrence County Tournament on Saturday at Black Rock.
The game was close in the first quarter, with Hoxie holding a 12-9 lead at the end of the period. Walnut Ridge took control of the game, outscoring the Lady Mustangs 44-22 over the next two quarters, and 11-0 in the final period.
Also in the scoring column for Walnut Ridge, Sunnie Cunningham, Tiye Flowers and Hannah Massey each contributed four points. Anna Bland finished with two points, while Whitney Rider and Hannah Doane each sank a free throw.
Courtney Sears led Hoxie with 10 points, followed by Brandy Alls with seven. Krista Vankirk scored five points. Brooke Willfond and Katelyn Fitzgerald each added four points, while Cheyenne Hatfield and Grace Hall had two points apiece.
WR - Hillcrest
Walnut Ridge earned its spot in the finals with a 63-45 semifinal win over the Hillcrest Lady Sceamin' Eagles.
The teams went to the locker room deadlocked at 28-28, but the Lady Bobcats took over in the second half, moving out to a 48-37 advantage after three quarters and continued to pull away in the final period.
McQuay and Massey each registered 20 points for the Lady Cats, while Kelley added 15. Bland had four points, and Cunningham and Doane each tallied two points.
Katelyn Richey led the Lady Screamin' Eagles with 18 points, and Stacy Maxwell finished with 11. Natalie Glenn had seven points, and Caitlin Whitmire added five. Rachel Crabtree and Amber Collins each had two points.
Hoxie's Cheyenne Hatfield knocked down seven three-pointers to finish with a game-high 21 points, as the Lady Mustangs advanced to the finals with a 60-45 victory over the Sloan-Hendrix Lady Greyhounds in semifinal action.
Hoxie led 16-13 at the end of the first quarter, 29-21 at halftime and 42-28 head into the fourth period.
Alls contributed 18 points, and Vankirk had 15 for the Lady Mustangs. Sears, Angel Morris and Sequoia Irvin each scored two points.
Britney Wolfe had 18 points to pace the Lady Greyhounds. Alyssa Nichols and Brittany Gosha each had seven points. Ashlyn Hays had four points. Ariel Malone had three points. Meagan Brown added two points, and Madison Luffman added one.
Hillcrest - BR
Hillcrest defeated the host Black Rock Lady Zebras 66-42 in the first round of the senior girls division.
The Lady Eagles led 13-7 after one quarter, 34-18 at halftime and 47-32 after three periods.
Caitlin Whitmire led Hillcrest with 16 points, and Maxwell had 12. Glenn finished with 11 points, and Richey added 10. Crabtree and Collins each had six points. Jodie Hoggard scored three points, and Kaitlin Geurin added two.
The Lady Zebras were led by Rachel Weekley's 18 points. Caylia Ervin and Erica Bass each finished with six points. Megan Carey and Chloe Foley added four points apiece, while Robin Maxie and Destyni Caldwell each had two points.
