The Hillcrest Screamin' Eagles won back-to-back championships with a victory over Walnut Ridge Saturday night in the senior boys division of the Lawrence County Tournament held at Black Rock. Screamin' Eagles are
The Hillcrest Screamin' Eagles claimed their second consecutive Lawrence County Tournament championship with a 65-47 victory over the Walnut Ridge Bobcats in the senior boys final on Saturday at Black Rock.
Hillcrest led the whole game, jumping out to a 9-2 first-quarter lead. Alex Helms had the hot hand for the Eagles in the second quarter, hitting four three-pointers and ringing up 14 of his 20 points, as Hillcrest moved out to a 30-20 lead. Helms finished with six three-pointers for the game.
Colman Evans took over in the third period, tallying 16 of his game-high 27 points, as the Screamin' Eagles stretched the lead to 49-29 and held off the Bobcats in the final period.
Also for Hillcrest, Evan Doyle had nine points, all in the second half. Cameron Durham added three points, while Brad Nunnally, David Lee Tidwell and Randall Scott each scored two points.
Kenzie Flippo led Walnut Ridge with 16 points. Martin Crisler finished with eight points, while Spencer Wilson and Drake Smelser each added six points. Cole Hicks scored five points. Darren Tribble added four points, and Kyle Nunley hit a pair of free throws.
Hillcrest - BR
Evans had 26 points, as Hillcrest defeated Black Rock 62-43 in a senior boys semifinal contest.
The game was close in the first half, with Hillcrest leading 12-7 at the end of the first quarter. The Zebras gave the home crowd plenty to cheer about, outscoring Hillcrest 17-6 in the period to carry a 24-18 lead into the locker room at the half.
The Screamin' Eagles broke the game open in the third quarter, outscoring the Black Rock 25-4 in the period to take a 43-28 advantage, and continued padding their lead in the fourth quarter.
Doyle also reached double figures for Hillcrest, with 10 points, and Alex Helms finished with nine points. Nunnally had six points, and Jeffrey Coles added five. Tidwell, Scott and Aaron Helms each had two points.
Caleb McKenzie paced Black Rock with 16 points, and Elijah Mondy added 10. Derrek Nunnally had eight points, and Ryan Roberts finished with four. Tim Andrews had three points, and Malachi Gott had two points.
WR - Hoxie
Rivals clashed in the senior boys semifinals, as the Walnut Ridge Bobcats outlasted the Hoxie Mustangs for a 47-42 victory.
Hoxie was in control early, taking a 19-9 lead in the first quarter, but the Bobcats fought back in the second period to cut the Mustangs' advantage to 24-23 at the intermission.
Walnut Ridge limited Hoxie to four points in the third quarter and overtook the Mustangs for a 36-28 lead heading into the fourth quarter. The Bobcats held off the Mustangs in the final period for the win.
Flippo led the Bobcats with 15 points, followed by Wilson with 10. Crisler and Ty Hollister each had six points, and Luke Wall added five. Smelser and Jacob Trinidad each had two points, and Cole Hicks added a free throw.
Hoxie was led by Alex Carpenter, who finished with 15 points on five three-pointers. Slade Sullens scored 11 points, and Tristan Sisco had seven. James Johnson had five points, and Jake Ellis added four.
BR - S-H
The host Black Rock Zebras posted a 67-55 first-round win over the Sloan-Hendrix Greyhounds in the senior boys division.
Black Rock led 9-8 after one quarter before moving out to a 34-19 halftime lead. The Zebras stretched the lead to 53-32 in the third quarter and held off the Greyhounds in the final period.
Nunnally led Black Rock with 15 points, and McKenzie added 13. Gott also reached double figures with 12 points, and Mondy added nine. River Ferguson finished with eight points, and Jerry Martin had four. Skyler Morris, Ryan Roberts and Carter Vance each had two points.
Three Greyhounds scored in double figures, led by Kyle Murphy with 21 points. Levi Yarbro scored 13 points, and Dylan Wood added 12. Nathan DeShazo had seven points, and Keith Saylors added two.
