appearance of county
Under the leadership of Lawrence County Chamber Board Chair Fran Cavenaugh, a new committee has been formed to address what she feels is a crucial issue for the county.
The Community Revitalization and Beautification Committee, led by board member Dina Hufstedler, has already begun meeting and is now seeking input.
While the committee hopes to have projects throughout the county, the initial focus is on Downtown Walnut Ridge.
"Tourism is the second largest industry in the state and Lawrence County has a lot to capitalize on," Cavenaugh said. "But when visitors come, they are not necessarily seeing the best image we can put forward."
The goal of the committee is to work toward rectifying that problem, whether it be painting a building, landscaping an intersection or cleaning up an area.
Hufstedler noted that many small business and property owners are simply struggling to survive. It is hoped that the committee will be able to organize projects to help them, as public funds and grant funds are often only available to non-profits.
"If you have work you would want done that you can't do, contact us," Hufstedler said. "We are still in the infancy stage, but it never hurts to have a list of possibilities to work from."
Hufstedler said the committee is currently working to form goals, as well as developing the proper way to proceed to meet those goals. In the meantime, anyone who would like to donate money or labor to the effort can contact either her or Cavenaugh or call the Chamber office at 886-3232.
"This is a priority for me," Cavenaugh said. "We as the Chamber want to address where we can help our county and the communities that make up our county. This is definitely an area where we can help."
