LawCo. Basketball roundup
Lawrence County basketball teams were in action in several games during the past week. Results included:
WR - S-H
Walnut Ridge hosted Sloan-Hendrix in a 2A-2 Conference matchup on Friday. In senior girls action, the Lady Bobcats got 21 points from Allyson McQuay to defeat Sloan-Hendrix 52-39.
The Lady Greyhounds led 24-23 at halftime, but a strong third quarter by the Lady Cats gave them a 36-29 advantage heading into the final quarter.
Caroline Kelley contributed 13 points for Walnut Ridge.
Sloan-Hendrix was led by Britney Wolfe with 17 points, while Alyssa Nichols added 11 points.
The Lady Bobcats improved to 6-3 in conference play and 10-5 overall.
Walnut Ridge won a junior high game 46-34.
The Walnut Ridge senior boys downed the Greyhounds 63-44 behind 22 points from Spencer Wilson.
Ty Hollister added 10 points for the Bobcats, who led 25-15 at halftime and 41-30 after three quarters.
Kyle Murphy led Sloan-Hendrix with 15 points, and Matt Wilkins scored 14.
The Bobcats improved to 5-4 in conference play and 5-7 overall.
The Black Rock senior girls fell to Armorel 58-32 in 1A-3 East Conference action at Armorel.
Rachel Weekley scored 15 points for the Lady Zebras.
Armorel won the junior girls game 30-20.
A dominating performance by Mark Thomas propelled Osceola to a narrow 67-64 win over the Hoxie Mustangs Friday night at Hoxie. Thomas finished with 31 points and 16 rebounds for the Seminoles.
Osceola led 34-28 at the intermission and 49-41 after three quarters.
James Johnson led Hoxie with 18 points. Alex Carpenter scored 15 points, and Tristan Sisco added 12 points.
The Mustangs fell to 2-7 in 3A-3 Conference play and 3-9 overall.
Osceola won the junior boys contest 53-9.
The Hillcrest Screamin' Eagles dropped a 1A-2 North Conference game at Calico Rock 66-57 on Friday.
The loss left the Eagles at 5-2 in the conference and 13-7 overall.
Brad Nunnally led Hillcrest with 19 points, and Colman Evans added 11.
Calico Rock also won a senior girls contest 46-35.
The Lady Eagles fell to 1-6 in conference play and 4-14 overall.
Natalie Glenn scored 17 points, and Caitlin Whitmire added 10 points for Hillcrest.
The Hillcrest junior girls defeated Calico Rock 30-19.
Carly Otwell had 14 points, and Rachael Durham finished with nine points for the junior Lady Eagles, who improved to 1-1 in conference play and 9-7 overall.
BR - Riverside
The Riverside Rebels gave Buster Campbell his 800th career coaching win with a 63-50 win over Black Rock Thursday at Caraway.
The Rebels led 25-14 after one quarter, but a strong second period by Black Rock gave the Zebras 34-33 lead at halftime. Riverside bounced back in the second half to outscore the Zebras 30-16 in the final two quarters.
Elijah Mondy led Black Rock with 12 points.
The Riverside senior girls defeated Black Rock 76-12.
Riverside led 32-3 at the end of the first quarter, 51-9 at halftime and 61-12 after three quarters.
Riverside won a junior girls game 41-18.
Harrisburg opened up an 18-point first-half lead and went on to defeat Hoxie's Lady Mustang 66-48 in 3A-3 Conference action at Hoxie.
Brandy Alls led Hoxie with 13 points.
The Lady Mustangs fell to 2-4 in conference play and 4-6 overall.
Harrisburg's junior girl defeated Hoxie 43-24, while Hoxie won a seventh-grade game 23-16.
Cedar Ridge's Lady Timberwolves handed Walnut Ridge a 63-54 defeat at Sharum Gymnasium on Thursday.
Kelley led three Lady Bobcats in double figures, with 17 points. McQuay scored 11 points, and Anna Bland added 10.
The Cedar Ridge senior boys topped Walnut Ridge 59-41.
The Timberwolves led 15-7 at the end of the first quarter, 32-19 at the half and 47-32 after three quarters.
Hollister had 12 points, and Wilson had 10 for Walnut Ridge.
Walnut Ridge defeated Cedar Ridge 48-28 in junior boys action.
Hoxie - Rivercrest
Rivercrest defeated Hoxie 69-51 in senior boys basketball on Jan. 14 at Hoxie.
The game was tied 25-25 at halftime, before the Colts pulled away in the second half.
Noah Adamson led Hoxie with 18 points, while Slade Sullens and Jake Ellis each scored 13 points.
The Rivercrest junior boys defeated Hoxie 57-27.
Bay defeated Black Rock 88-50 in a 1A-3 East senior boys contest at Bay.
The Yellowjackets led 28-11 after one quarter, 44-15 at halftime and 71-35 at the end of the third period.
Bay also won a junior boys game 47-18.
Maynard defeated Hillcrest 82-65 in non-conference senior boys basketball action at Maynard.
Maynard led 49-28 at halftime and 67-38 after three quarters.
Evans had 18 points, and Alex Helms added 14 points for Hillcrest.
The Hillcrest junior boys defeated Maynard 49-34.
The Walnut Ridge basketball teams made the long road trip to face 2A-2 Conference opponent Cotter on Jan. 14.
The Walnut Ridge senior boys defeated Cotter 63-35, as three Bobcats scored in double figures.
The Bobcats led 33-22 at halftime, before stretching the lead to 50-30 in the third quarter.
Martin Crisler led the Cats with 16 points, while Spencer Wilson scored 14 points, and Darren Tribble added 12.
Walnut Ridge's Lady Bobcats also rolled to an easy victory, defeating the Lady Warriors 78-27.
Hannah Doane led the Lady Cats with 12 points, and McQuay added 11. Kelley and Bland each scored 10 points.
Cotter won a junior boys game 59-27.
The finals of the Hillcrest Junior Invitational Tournament were played Saturday, with champions being crowned in both the boys and girls divisions.
Izard County Consolidated defeated Hoxie 49-37 in the girls final.
Hoxie led 14-10 after one quarter and 23-20 at halftime, but ICC outcored the Lady Mustangs 17-3 in the third quarter to move into a 37-26 lead.
Sidney Gillham led Hoxie with 12 points, and Bekah Kopp had nine points.
Two Lawrence County teams squared off in the boys final, with the Sloan-Hendrix junior Greyhounds defeating Hillcrest 47-31.
The game was close for three quarters, with Sloan-Hendrix holding leads of 14-10 after one quarter, 22-17 at the intermission and 28-22 entering the fourth quarter. The junior Hounds outscored Hillcrest 19-9 in the final period to pull away for the victory.
Three Greyhounds reached double figures, led by Colby Johnson with 20 points. Tyler Murphy scored 14 points, and Logan McCain finished with 10.
Dylan Nunnally had 13 points to lead Hillcrest.
