County faring well in extreme cold

COLD FIRST DAY - Sam Darrington of Batesville bundles up for her first day back at Williams Baptist College Monday. Temperatures stayed freezing all day with the high for the day being 14 and the low in the single digits.

A new half-cent sales tax for Lawrence Memorial Hospital, which was passed by Lawrence County voters in August, goes into effect today (Wednesday). While the forecasted snow never hit Lawrence County, temperatures hit extreme lows Monday causing everyone to bundle up. According to Weather Underground, the highest the temperature reached Monday was 14.

Minor precipitation fell Sunday morning but mostly cleared out before temperatures dropped.

Lawrence County has faired well in the cold with isolated cases of frozen water meters and supply lines to individual homes, but no major water supply issues.

Voters to pick new governor in 2014

A new election year is upon us and many races will take place in 2014 both statewide and locally. This will be Mike Beebe's final term as Arkansas Governor. Beebe has served since January 2007 and is barred by term limits from seeking re-election.

Murder case involves
Lawrence Co. natives

A Lawrence County native is dead after being shot in his home on Sunday morning in the 23900 block along Highway 300 in Roland.

New barn planned for fairgrounds

The Lawrence County Fair Board has agreed to apply for a $15,000 grant from Arkansas Rural Services to build a new barn at the fairgrounds.

Crafton seeks reelection

Marilyn Crafton of Walnut Ridge will be seeking reelection as Lawrence County Treasurer in 2014.
