Mustangs have banner season
The Hoxie Mustangs senior high football team enjoyed a banner season in 2013.
The Mustangs achieved the first undefeated regular season in school history with a 10-0 record and earned the school its first outright conference championship. Hoxie won two games in the state playoffs to advance to the quarterfinals for the second time in school history. The team finished with a 12-1 final record.
Also, Tom Sears earned his 100th career win as head coach of the Mustangs.
Final stats for the 2013 Mustangs included:
Cole Sears - 50-of-94 for 1,065 yards, 18 touchdowns and four interceptions.
James Johnson - 1-of-1 for 31 yards.
Gunner Cook - 218 attempts for 1,528 yards and 17 touchdowns.
Cole Sears - 177 attempts for 1,276 yards and 18 touchdowns.
Robert Ivy - 26 attempts for 231 yards and three touchdowns.
Jacob Henson - 19 attempts for 192 yards and two touchdowns.
Kyle Wilson - 23 attempts for 145 yards and two touchdowns.
Colton Brown - 22 attempts for 160 yards and one touchdown.
James Johnson - four attempts for 108 yards and one touchdown.
Gunner Riggs - two attempts for 21 yards and one touchdown.
Slade Sullens - 20 receptions for 419 yards and eight touchdowns.
Hunter Wilson - 11 receptions for 261 yards and three touchdowns.
Kyle Wilson - six receptions for 96 yards.
James Johnson - four receptions for 140 yards.
Jacob Henson - three receptions for 30 yards.
Gunner Cook - two receptions for 66 yards.
Colton Brown was the Mustangs' leading tackler, with 143 total stops, including 45 solo tackles and 98 assists. He also led the team with 17 tackles for loss and caused four fumbles. Brown finished his career with 467 tackles and caused seven fumbles. He is one of three finalists for the 2013 Farm Bureau Defensive Player of the Year in Class 3A.
Other defensive leaders included:
Recovered fumbles: Austin Williams, four.
Interceptions: Kyle Wilson, three.
Sacks: Stephen Arnold, 15. Conner Roberts had 13 sacks in 2013 and finished with 25 career sacks.
Blocked passes: Slade Sullens, six.
