Old Man Winter delivered a mighty blow to event planners in Lawrence County as what is generally the busiest weekend of the holiday season, quickly became void of plans due to freezing rain and sleet that moved into the area on Thursday night.
The Hoxie Christmas parade, Dickens in the Park events and Circle of Friends' Santa's Workshop were all rescheduled (see related stories).
Also postponed was the Lawrence Memorial Heath Foundation's annual Gala. That event will be rescheduled, but a date has not been set at this time.
The Williams Baptist College Basketball Tournament is now set to conclude this week. The semifinal matches, which do not include any Lawrence County teams, had to be postponed (see related story).
In addition, the Northeast Arkansas Chorale's annual performance and The Compassionate Friends' annual Candle Lighting Service were cancelled due to the road conditions. These events will not be rescheduled.
Also cancelled were the Lynn and Black Rock Christmas parades. The bicycle giveaway planned at Lynn will now be held during the Lynn Community Dinner Saturday night at 5:30 at the Lynn Community Center. Black Rock will still have its citywide Christmas lighting contest. Any house within the city limits decorated with lights will be judged on Monday night. The winner will be announced Tuesday morning.
Most church services in the county were also cancelled on Sunday, in addition to numerous regular season ball games and special events at local schools.
