WBC Tournament underway

Hillcrest's Colman Evans shoots over a Tuckerman defender in a first-round game Saturday at WBC. Evans recorded 41 points for the Screamin' Eagles, but Tuckerman edged Hillcrest 69-66 to advance.

The 55th annual Williams Baptist College Basketball Tournament began Saturday at the Southerland-Mabee Center on the WBC campus. Fans were treated to some exciting games, as four of the day's eight contests were decided by four points or less.

Marmaduke - Viola boys

The 10th-seeded Marmaduke boys provided the first upset of the tournament in the first game of the day, defeating the seventh-seeded Viola Longhorns 42-41 on a three-pointer by Hayden Winberry with under five seconds remaining. Winberry finished with a game-high 23 points.

S-H - Westside boys

The Westside Warriors boys defeated Sloan-Hendrix 70-32.

Keith Saylors led Sloan-Hendrix with nine points. Toby Lee, Dylan Wood and Matthew Wilkins each scored five points. Kyle Murphy added four points, and Nathan DeShazo had two points.

Rico Mayo led Westside with 18 points.

S-H - Hillcrest girls

In a matchup between two Lawrence County teams, the Sloan-Hendrix Lady Greyhounds overcame a three-point deficit at the start of the fourth quarter to defeat the Hillcrest Lady Screamin' Eagles 50-47. The Lady Greyhounds will play Corning tonight at 5:30.

Britney Wolfe led Sloan-Hendrix with 11 points, while Alyssa Nichols and Jessie Powell each chipped in nine points. Cheyenne Vance and Brittany Gosha had seven points apiece. Bailey Bradley added four points, and Natalie Gipson finished with three points.

Katelyn Richey led three Hillcrest players in double figure with 17 points. Stacy Maxwell had 13 points, and Natalie Glenn added 10. Caitlin Whitmire contributed seven points.

Hillcrest - Tuckerman boys

The defending boys champion Hillcrest was upset by the 11th-seeded Tuckerman Bulldogs 69-66 despite a 41-point effort from Colman Evans. Evans' performance is tied for third all-time for single game scoring in tournament history.

Also for Hillcrest, Brad Nunnally had eight points, and Aaron Helms added five points. Randall Scott finished with four points. Cody Brannon and Evan Doyle each scored three points, and Cameron Durham added two points.

Brandon Barnett scored 25 points to lead Tuckerman.

BR - Tuckerman girls

Tuckerman's Lady Bulldogs defeated Black Rock 62-35.

Rachael Weekley led the Lady Zebras with 13 points. Erica Bass contributed seven points, and Megan Carey added six points. Cayla Ervin had five points.

Chloe Foley finished with four points, and Kendra Cole added two.

BR - Maynard boys

The Maynard boys defeated Black Rock 70-55. Colton Watson set the single-game tournament scoring record with 45 points for Maynard.

The Zebras were led by Elijah Mondy with 11 points. Malachi Gott, Derrek Nunally and Tim Andrews each scored nine points, while Ryan Roberts added seven points. Caleb McKenzie had five points. Jerry Martin finished with three points, and Skyler Morris had two points.

WR - Maynard girls

The Walnut Ridge Lady Bobcats crushed Maynard's Lady Tigers 81-32.

Hannah Massey led Walnut Ridge with 22 points. Allyson McQuay had 15 points, and Anna Bland added 12. Tiye Flowers had nine points, and Sunnie Cunningham added eight points. Whitney Rider contributed six points. Caroline Kelley had five points, and Courtney Cox added four points.

WR - Corning boys

The final game of the day was a battle of the Bobcats between Corning and Walnut Ridge. Corning escaped with a 46-45 victory behind 15 points from Trevor Barajas.

Kenzie Flippo led Walnut Ridge with 13 points, while Spencer Wilson and Ty Hollister each had 11 points. Martin Crisler scored seven points.
