Basketball season continued for Lawrence County schools last week.
S-H - Mammoth Spring
Matt Wilkins scored 34 points to lead the Sloan-Hendrix Greyhounds to a 76-62 overtime victory over Mammoth Spring in senior boys basketball action at Imboden.
Mammoth Spring tied the game 57-57 with a buzzer-beater at the end of regulation, but the Greyhounds dominated the extra period, outscoring the Bears 19-5, to claim the win.
Toby Lee chipped in 12 points for Sloan-Hendrix, who improved to 2-6 on the season.
Sloan-Hendrix won a senior girls contest 36-23, and a junior boys game 60-49.
Hillcrest traveled to Norfork to face the Panthers in 1A-2 North Conference action.
The Hillcrest senior boys defeated Norfork in a close contest 84-78 behind a 36 point, 16-rebound performance from Colman Evans.
The teams were tied 12-12 at the end of the first quarter before the Panthers moved into a 43-35 lead at the half. The Screamin' Eagles closed the gap to 60-59 after three quarters, and outscored Norfork 25-18 in the final period for the win.
Walker Morgan contributed 17 points, and Randall Scott added 16 for Hillcrest, who improved to 8-1 with the win.
Hillcrest's senior girls overcame an early double-digit deficit to defeat the Lady Panthers 53-43.
Norfork led 14-4 after one quarter of play, but Hillcrest was able to gain ground in the second period to trail by only 25-19 at halftime. The Lady Eagles continued their comeback in the third quarter and led 37-33 heading into the fourth period.
Katelyn Richey recorded a double-double for Hillcrest, with 22 points and 11 rebounds.
Maynard's Colton Watson scored 44 points to lead the Tigers to an 89-57 win over the Black Rock Zebras at Maynard.
The Tigers led 37-30 at halftime and 62-41 after three quarters.
Maynard won a junior boys game 50-42.
WR - Piggott
The Walnut Ridge Lady Bobcats opened the 2013-2014 basketball season with a 73-37 thrashing of Piggott on Thursday night at Sharum Gymnasium.
Walnut Ridge held a 22-10 advantage at the end of the first quarter and continued to stretch the lead throughout the game, leading 40-25 at halftime and 56-32 after three quarters.
Allyson McQuay led Walnut Ridge with 22 points. Hannah Massey scored 13 points, and Anna Bland added 11 for the Lady Cats.
Walnut Ridge won a junior girls game 39-21 and a seventh-grade game 10-8.
S-H - BR
County foes Sloan-Hendrix and Black Rock squared off in an exciting senior boys contest, with the Greyhounds earning their first win of the season with a 78-71 overtime victory at Black Rock.
Black Rock led 54-47 at the end of the third quarter, only to see the Greyhounds rally to tie the game 64-64 at the end of regulation.
Kyle Murphy turned in some clutch free-throw shooting for Sloan-Hendrix, hitting all 10 of his attempts in the extra period. Murphy finished with 30 points for the game, and Wilkins contributed with 28 points.
Derek Nunnally led a balanced Zebra attack with 15 points, while Malachi Gott and Elijah Mondy chipped in 14 points apiece.
Hillcrest's teams coasted to three easy victories over Crowley's Ridge Academy in high school basketball action at Lynn.
Two Screamin' Eagles posted double-doubles, as the senior boys defeated CRA 87-61.
Evans finished with 34 points and 10 rebounds, and Evan Doyle recorded 13 points and 14 rebounds. Brad Nunnally contributed 11 points for Hillcrest.
A pair of Hillcrest girls also recorded double-doubles, as the Lady Eagles routed CRA 52-23.
Stacy Maxwell had 11 points and 13 steals, while Caitlin Whitmire added 13 points and 13 rebounds. Natalie Glenn finished with 11 points, and Rachel Crabtree grabbed 12 rebounds.
