The Hoxie Mustangs put an early end to Friday's 3A state playoff game against Elkins with 41 first-half points en route to a 54-0 victory.

Cole Sears turned in a big first half for Hoxie. The Mustang quarterback scored on a seven-yard run and Casey Middlecoff kicked the first of his extra-points to give Hoxie a 7-0 lead with 8:20 left in the first quarter. Sears passed 18 yards to Hunter Wilson later in the period to give the Mustangs a 14-0 lead.

Hoxie put the game out of reach with 27 points in the second quarter. The Mustang defense got into the act when Slade Sullens scooped up an Elks fumble and returned it 36 yards for a score.

Sears tossed a 65-yard touchdown pass to James Johnson, and later followed it with an eight-yard scoring run, as the Mustangs continued to pull away. Gunner Cook tallied Hoxie's final score of the half on a 12-yard run, as the Mustangs took a 41-0 lead into the locker room.

Hoxie added a pair of touchdowns in the second half. Robert Ivy scored on a four-yard run in the third quarter, and Johnson broke free for a 65-yard score in the fourth period.

Sears finished with 70 yards rushing and two touchdowns on 11 carries. He completed three-of-five passes for 95 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Cook led the Mustang ground attack with 119 yards and a touchdown on 14 attempts. Johnson finished with 108 yards and a touchdown on just four carries.

The Mustangs ran their record to a perfect 11-0 with the win, which was head coach Tom Sears' 100th victory at HHS. Hoxie will host Barton in a second-round matchup at Crider Field on Friday at 7 p.m. The back gate of the football stadium will be open this week as a convenience to those who park at the new gym or in the elementary parking area.
