Carter shares Secret Service experience at banquet



MAN, WOMAN OF YEAR NAMED AT BANQUET - The Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce named Milton Smith and Gretchen Hunt as the Man and Woman of the Year at its annual banquet Thursday. Outgoing Board Chair Dr. Brett Cooper (above) presented Smith with his award, and Incoming Board Chair Fran Cavenaugh (below) presented the award to Hunt.

Bill Carter, former U.S. Secret Service agent, attorney, politician, television producer and more, spoke at the annual Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce banquet Thursday evening about his work as an agent during the Kennedy and Johnson administrations.

L.J. Bryant, who spoke prior to Carter, said, "This is my third Chamber banquet and Mr. Carter is the speaker that I've been the most excited about."

When Carter approached the podium he posed the question: "Where were you when President Kennedy was shot?" Carter, a native of Rector, entered the Secret Service in 1962. He was 26 years old and was in Washington, D.C., the day President Kennedy was assassinated.

Airport Commission discusses budget

Walnut Ridge Airport commissioners discussed the impact the Affordable Care Act will have on the 2014 budget at their meeting on Monday. Employee healthcare coverage will rise from $488 to $530 a month for each employee.

WR senior ahead of
the game for college

Edward Harthorn, a senior at Walnut Ridge High School, is doing what many high school seniors do. He's filling out college applications, thinking about his future and planning for his high school graduation. However, Edward's first year of college will be quite different from many students' first year because he will be entering with 60 hours of college credit already under his belt.
