Lady Mustangs conclude season
Hoxie's senior high volleyball team concluded a stellar season with a trip to the 3A State Tournament in Harrison last week.
The Lady Mustangs received the fourth-place seed from the 3A-Northeast Conference and faced St. Joseph School of Conway, the champions of 3A-Central, in the first round. Hoxie swept the Lady Bulldogs in three sets 25-16, 25-14, 25-14, to advance to the second round.
Courtney Sears finished with two kills, seven digs and two blocks. Grace Hall had seven kills, 10 digs and a block. Krista Vankirk had 14 assists, six kills and three digs. Zoe Willfond contributed nine assists and a dig, and Emily Hatfield had six digs. Chasity Kingsland had two kills and a dig. Sequoia Irvin had five kills and three digs, and Brooke Willfond added six digs.
Hoxie's next opponent was the Mansfield Lady Tigers, champions of the 3A-West Conference. Mansfield eliminated the Lady Mustangs with a three-set victory, 25-12, 25-22, 25-17.
Sears had nine kills, 11 digs and a block. Hall added five kills and two blocks. Maria Fry tallied four kills, two digs and two blocks, and Hatfield added four digs. Zoe Willfond had five assists and two digs. Vankirk contributed 11 assists, two digs and two blocks, and Brooke Willfond added five digs.
Sears was named to the All-State Tournament team. The Lady Mustangs ended the season with a 17-9 record and were 7-5 in conference play.
The Lady Mustangs concluded regular-season play with a hard-fought loss at Cave City on Oct. 22. The Cavewomen claimed a five-set victory 25-18, 23-25, 16-25, 27-25, 15-12.
Sears had 14 kills, 10 digs and seven blocks. Hall had 14 kills, six digs and three blocks. Fry added seven kills and 13 digs. Zoe Willfond had 12 assists and six digs. Kingsland finished with three kills, two digs and two blocks. Vankirk tallied 26 assists, three kills, nine digs and three blocks. Irvin had three kills, three digs and two blocks, and Brooke Willfond added 12 digs.
