Mustangs clinch conference title
The Hoxie Mustangs rolled over the Piggott Mohawks 47-7 in senior high football action Friday night at Piggott. The victory wrapped up the 3A-3 Conference championship and gave the Mustangs the league's top seed in the state playoffs.
Quarterback Cole Sears accounted for four touchdowns in the first quarter, as the Mustangs jumped out to a 27-0 lead. Sears threw scoring passes of 20 and 23 yards to Slade Sullens for a 14-0 lead.
Sears then scored on a 41-yard run. He followed that up with a 28-yard strike to James Johnson with 1:16 to play in the period.
Gunner Cook extended the Mustangs' lead on a 26-yard run in the second quarter. Jacob Henson ran for an 18-yard touchdown before halftime.
Piggott scored a touchdown and PAT in the closing seconds of the first half.
The only points of the second half came on a 21-yard run by the Mustangs' Gunner Riggs in the third quarter.
Sears finished with eight completions on nine attempts, for 175 yards and three touchdowns. He added 82 yards rushing and one touchdown on four attempts.
Cook led Hoxie's ground game with 147 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries. Sullens caught three passes for 50 yards and a pair of touchdowns, and Kyle Wilson had three receptions for 80 yards.
Casey Middlecoff kicked five extra-points for the Mustangs, who improved to 6-0 in the conference and 9-0 overall.
Hoxie will close out the regular season against Harrisburg on senior night Thursday at Crider Field. Seniors will be recognized at 6:30 p.m., and game time is 7.
