Mustangs defeat Corning 42-14
The Hoxie Mustangs took another step closer to a 3A-3 conference championship with a dominating 42-14 victory over the Corning Bobcats in senior high football action Friday night at Corning. The Mustangs can clinch the title with a win at Piggott this week.
Gunner Cook ran for three touchdowns in the first quarter, as Hoxie took control of the game early. Cook scored on a 41-yard run to get things started for the Mustangs. Casey Middlecoff kicked the first of his six PATs to give Hoxie a quick 7-0 lead.
Cook then scored on runs of 17 and 67 yards, and Cole Sears ran for a nine-yard touchdown, as the Mustangs built a 28-0 lead in the opening period.
Sears added a 20-yard scoring run in the second quarter to lift Hoxie to a 35-0 lead at halftime. Sears went on to score Hoxie's final touchdown on a 35-yard run early in the fourth quarter.
Cook finished with 231 yards and three touchdowns on his 18 carries. Sears ran for 130 yards and three scores on 16 attempts.
Hoxie stayed undefeated on the season with an 8-0 record and is 5-0 in conference play. The Mustangs lead Rivercrest by one game, with two games remaining. Hoxie defeated the Colts earlier this season. The Mustangs' game at Piggott is scheduled for 7 p.m.
