Marked Tree slips by WR
A late touchdown pass lifted the Marked Tree Indians past Walnut Ridge 12-8 in senior high football action Friday night at Marked Tree.
Walnut Ridge led most of the way on the strength of Cole Hicks's four-yard run with 38 seconds to play in the first quarter. Hicks ran for the two-point conversion to give the Bobcats an 8-0 lead.
Marked Tree cut the Bobcats' lead to 8-6 on a nine-yard pass from Brody McCrary to Daniel Rucker with 33 seconds remaining in the second quarter. The conversion attempt failed, leaving Walnut Ridge with an 8-6 lead at the end of the first half.
The lead looked like it might hold up for Walnut Ridge until Marked Tree embarked on an 88-yard drive late in the fourth quarter. The drive was capped when McCrary hooked up with Rucker for what would prove to be the game-winning touchdown from 16 yards out with 2:15 to play.
Hicks led Walnut Ridge in rushing with 81 yards on 20 carries. Tyler Andrews rushed 10 times for 68 yards, and Martin Crisler added 31 yards on seven carries.
Defensively, the Bobcats were led by Tyler Fry with nine tackles. Cody Reithemeyer added seven tackles, and Billy Lawson had five.
The loss left Walnut Ridge at 2-2 in the 2A-3 Conference standings and 3-4 overall. The Bobcats return to Sexton Field to host the Salem Greyhounds in another conference bout Friday night. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
