BR campus to close
The Lawrence County School Board voted at its meeting Tuesday evening to consolidate the Black Rock and Walnut Ridge campuses at the end of the school year.
Supt. Terry Belcher cited a continued loss of enrollment on the Black Rock campus since the two K-12 schools became one district.
"When we consolidated, Black Rock had 340 students," he said. "Enrollment has been as low as 250 and is currently 261."
He said enrollment is also down on the Walnut Ridge campus, and the district is already preparing for less funding for the 2014-15 school year.
"I told the board we could not keep going in the direction we were," he said.
The board approved his recommendation to bring the Black Rock students to the Walnut Ridge campus. He said there will be a reduction in staff for the next school year, but details are not known at this time.
"Making this decision now will give us time to make preparations for the 2014-15 school year," Belcher said.
