Hoxie dominates in first conference game
Cole Sears passed for three touchdowns, and Gunner Cook found the end zone three times as the Mustangs opened 3A-3 Conference play with a 55-20 rout of Osceola in 3A-3 football action Friday night at Osceola.
Hoxie jumped out to a first-quarter lead on Cook's 42-yard run with 9:51 to play. Later in the period, Cole Sears passed 29 yards to Slade Sullens for another touchdown, putting the Mustangs up 14-0.
Osceola closed the gap to 14-6 on a 58-yard run from Ashton Nalls late in the quarter.
Hoxie broke the game open with three touchdowns in the second period. Sears ran for a 29-yard score to make the score 21-6. Cook then took a Sears' pass and raced 55 yards for a touchdown and a 28-6 lead. Sears closed the half with a keeper from a yard out, as the Mustangs took a commanding 35-6 advantage into halftime.
The teams traded scores in the third quarter. First, the Seminoles scored on a 32-yard run from Darrious Miller. The two-point conversion cut Hoxie's lead to 35-14. The Mustangs responded with a 24-yard pass from Sears to Hunter Wilson to make the score 42-14.
Hoxie had the ball deep in Osceola territory when the third period ended. Cook capped the Mustangs' drive with a 10-yard run on the first play of the fourth quarter.
After Osceola scored on an 80-yard pass play, Hoxie's Robert Ivy broke loose for a 60-yard touchdown run to close the scoring.
The Mustangs rolled up 485 total yards, including 361 on the ground.
Cook led Hoxie in rushing with 124 yards on 19 carries, while Sears added 108 yards on 15 carries. Ivy finished with 89 yards on seven attempts, and Jacob Henson had one carry for 22 yards. Colton Brown had one carry for nine yards. Kyle Wilson had a five-yard carry, and Colton Johnson had two carries for four yards.
Sears completed all five of his pass attempts for 124 yards and three touchdowns.
Hunter Wilson had two catches for 39 yards, while Sullens caught two passes for 30 yards. Cook had one reception for 55 yards.
Casey Middlecoff hit five-of-seven extra points, and Hunter Wilson was one-of-one on PAT attempts.
Hoxie improved to 4-0 on the season and 1-0 in 3A-3 Conference play. The Mustangs are on the road again this week, playing at Rivercrest in a 7 p.m. contest.
