WR wins conference opener
Walnut Ridge's Cole Hicks and Tyler Binkley combined for over 300 yards rushing as the Bobcats defeated 2A-3 rival McCrory 37-8 in the conference opener Friday night at Sexton Field.
Hicks ran for 206 yards, while Binkley added 139 yards for the Bobcats, who scored 29 unanswered points to break an 8-8 second-quarter tie.
Walnut Ridge jumped into the lead when Hicks got free for a 71-yard touchdown scamper in the final minute of the first quarter. Binkley ran in the conversion to put the Bobcats ahead 8-0.
The Jaguars tied the game with a touchdown and conversion in the second quarter.
Walnut Ridge regained the lead just before halftime on Tyler Andrews' quarterback keeper from two yards out with 58 seconds remaining. Hicks added the conversion to put the Bobcats up 16-8 at the break.
The Bobcats continued to pull away in the second half. Binkley scored on a 65-yard romp with 6:28 to play in the third quarter, and Martin Crisler ran for the conversion to give Walnut Ridge a 24-8 advantage.
Binkley added a 12-yard scoring run, and Hicks ran for an eight-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter to close out the scoring.
Walnut Ridge's defense held McCrory to 118 yards of total offense for the game. Cody Reithemeyer led the Cats with nine tackles, while Darren Medlock had eight stops. Hicks and Shelby Wake each picked off a Jaguar pass, and Binkley recorded two sacks.
Walnut Ridge improved to 2-2 overall and 1-0 in league play. The Bobcats head to Lepanto to face East Poinsett County on Friday. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
