Officials respond to drowning

On Friday, Lawrence County officials responded to the Spring River Access Point in Imboden, where a fishing excursion ended in one fatality.

Alta Simington, 78, of Ravenden Springs, drowned after her vehicle rolled off the boat ramp into the river.

"An elderly couple were backing their vehicle with boat attached into the water. When the male exited the vehicle, the truck, boat and trailer rolled into the water," said Lawrence County Sheriff Jody Dotson.

According to Dotson, Simington escaped from the vehicle but was unable to reach the bank.

"Her husband tried to save her, but the current was too strong and she drowned," said Dotson.

Rescue workers from the Lawrence County Sheriff's Department and the Imboden Volunteer Fire Department recovered her body from the river and she was pronounced dead at the scene.

The sheriff's department released the victim's name after the family was notified.
