Mustangs blank Cave City
The Hoxie Mustangs shut out Cave City 35-0 in senior high football action Friday night at Crider Field.
Jacob Henson scored the Mustangs' first points on a 42-yard run with 1:38 to play in the first quarter. Casey Middlecoff kicked the first of his five PATs for a 7-0 Hoxie lead.
Kyle Wilson scored the Mustang's next points on a 15-yard run with 3:41 remaining in the second period. Middlocoff's extra-point gave Hoxie a 14-0 lead, which they carried into the locker room at halftime.
Hoxie put the game out of reach with three touchdowns in the third quarter. Cole Sears scored on a 42-yard run at the nine-minute mark, and added a one-yard score to stretch the Mustangs' lead to 28-0 with 5-33 to play in the period.
Gunner Cook scored Hoxie's final touchdown on a 20-yard run with 2:53 to play in the third quarter.
Hoxie rushed for 308 yards as a team, led by Sears' 111 yards on 11 carries. Cook added 84 yards on 16 carries, while Henson finished with 48 yards on two attempts. Robert Ivy carried six times for 35 yards, and Wilson had three carries for 24 yards. Colton Johnson gained 12 yards on two carries, while James Johnson added 10 yards on four carries.
The Mustangs attempted on two passes on the evening, with Sears completing a 16-yarder to Slade Sullens.
Hoxie improved to 3-0 on the season. The Mustangs will open 3A-3 Conference play on Friday when they travel to Osceola. Game time is 7 p.m.
