Hoxie tramples Trumann, 42-6
The Hoxie Mustangs scored on their first play from scrimmage and never looked back, en route to a 42-6 win over the Trumann Wildcats in the first game of the senior high football season Friday night at Crider Field.
Hoxie struck with another big play when Gunner Cook broke free for a 70-yard touchdown run with 2:08 remaining to give the Mustangs a 13-0 lead after one period.
The score remained 13-0 until the Mustangs put the game away with two touchdowns late in the second quarter. Cook scored on a three-yard run with 3:16 to play before halftime. Quarterback Cole Sears kept for the two-point conversion and a 21-0 Mustang lead.
Hoxie's defense stopped Trumann and got the ball back for the offense. The Mustangs cashed in on the opportunity when Sears scored on a 13-yard run 17 seconds before halftime. Casey Middlecoff added the PAT to give Hoxie a 28-0 lead at the break.
The Mustang defense came up big again when Colton Brown forced a Wildcat fumble early in the third quarter. Brown scooped up the ball and returned it 26 yards for a score. Middlecoff's PAT pushed Hoxie's advantage to 35-0.
Trumann's Justin Lyles passed 20 yards to Weston Gilliam for the Wildcats' only points with 3:41 to play in the third period.
Hoxie closed out the scoring on Sears' 21-yard run late in the quarter. Middlecoff kicked his fourth PAT for the final point.
Cook led the Mustangs' rushing attack, with 110 yards and two touchdowns on 10 carries. Sears added 74 yards and a pair of touchdowns on six attempts. Jacob Henson had 43 yards on three carries, and Kyle Wilson had 10 yards on two carries.
Sears completed three-of-four pass attempts for 99 yards and a touchdown.
Sullens had one reception for a 69-yard touchdown. Hunter Wilson caught one pass for 19 yards, and Cook had one reception for 11 yards.
Brown led the Mustangs' defensive effort with 17 tackles and one touchdown on a fumble recovery. Zach Manus had 13 tackles. Austin Williams and Stephen Arnold each recorded nine stops. Chase Spradlin had seven tackles, and Conner Roberts had six. Slade Sullens and Dillon Cheatham each made five tackles. Hunter Wilson and Kyle Wilson each had four tackles.
Tyler Ward had three tackles. Henson, Blake Mullen, Spencer Hart, Colton Johnson, Gunner Riggs, Middlecoff and Seth Wagoner each had two tackles. James Johnson, Rylee Lewis, Austin Blocker, Robert Ivy, Brad Skimahorn, Dillion Littlejohn, Jesse Moore, Dillon Cagle and Johnny Johnson each made one tackle.
Hoxie will take to the road to face Riverview on Friday in Searcy. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
