Baker's team wins
Chase Baker holds his trophy as a member of Arkansas Legends, the 14 and Under 2013 USSSA Baseball World Series Champs.
Walnut Ridge's Chase Baker is a member of the Paragould-based Arkansas Legends baseball team that returned Sunday from St. Louis as winners of the 14AA USSSA World Series. The 14 and under team is comprised of players from Paragould, Pocahontas and Walnut Ridge.
Nine teams qualified in that division for the series, with the Arkansas Legends playing teams from Missouri, Tennessee, Iowa and Illinois. The Legends went undefeated, 6-0, in tournament play to win.
Opening ceremonies for the World Series took place at the St. Louis Cardinals game at Busch Stadium on Wednesday, July 10, when the Cardinals won over the Houston Astros. During the ceremony, some 40 teams at the series participated in a parade, where the boys walked around the field.
During the game, one of the parents of the Legends, who was seated behind the bullpen, caught the homerun ball hit by Matt Carpenter in the seventh inning.
In the finals, the Arkansas Legends won in extra innings against the Bombers from O'Fallon Ill.
Chase said that going to the World Series with the Arkansas Legends has been one of his top experiences in baseball and allowed him to make a lot of new friends.
"They are one of my favorite baseball teams that I have ever played on," he said.
Chase started and ended at third base for the Legends, but he was classified as a utility player, seeing playing time in the outfield, at second base and as a pitcher.
Chase's family, including parents, Billy and Lindy Baker, and younger brothers, Cannon and Cash, also got to be a part of the experience. "They just took us in," said Lindy of the other families of Legends team members.
Chase will be a ninth-grader in the fall at Walnut Ridge High School, where he will be eligible to play high school baseball.
