Hoxie sewer rate to increase
After a public hearing on July 9, the Hoxie City Council passed an ordinance at its meeting that will increase sewer rates beginning Sept. 1 for each user connected and served by the sewer system. The increase will only affect the first 1,000 gallons used and raises that cost from $4.40 to $6.
The raise in sewer rates is required to receive a bond of $309,000 to be used to renovate two sanitary lift sewer stations and replacing approximately 900 water meters.
The council also adopted a comprehensive plan for the city of Hoxie and a revised zoning code as presented on June 11. Copies of the comprehensive plan and zoning code are kept on file in City Clerk Katie Smith's office for public review.
The comprehensive plan includes several street projects to improve traffic flow, affordable housing, a new park and the growth of commercial and industrial zones.
Also at the meeting:
- the mayor announced that Walnut Ridge City Water Works Manager John Kopp will not be able to act as interim Hoxie water/wastewater superintendent as previously reported. Wesley Adams with Lawrence County Rural Water is acting as interim superintendent, but the city is still looking for a full-time superintendent.
- Assistant Fire Chief Will Tate announced that he was appointed to director of the office of emergency management on July 8. He assured the council that it would not affect his work with the Hoxie Fire Department.
- Tate also announced that the take-home vehicle policy has already shown positive results and has allowed him to get to a site and start putting out the fire before the engine could arrive.
- the city is working to form clean city committees, which will work on a volunteer basis to clean up abandoned properties and other areas in need. Currently three properties have been cleaned and the city stands at 76 abandoned properties.
