Sales tax to rise July 1
Arkansans will see a one-half percent (or half cent) rise in sales tax beginning July 1.
The half cent is a result of the passage of Amendment 91 to the Arkansas Constitution in the Nov. 2012 General Election. The increase will be used to purchase bonds for state highways. The tax has a 10-year sunset clause.
The additional tax will not apply to grocery items.
In Walnut Ridge, the sales tax rate will rise from 8.5 percent to 9.0 percent.
The state tax has been 6.5 percent, with a 1.0 percent county tax, one-half percent city tax and one-half percent hospital tax to supplement Lawrence Memorial Hospital's Emergency Department.
