Splash pad completion
set for next summer
Work on an eagerly awaited splash pad at the Walnut Ridge swimming pool will be built in stages and will not be completed until next year, according to Walnut Ridge Mayor Don House.
"We are applying for two more grants that will provide the rest of the money needed to pay for the project," House said. "The grants are 100 percent grants from the Department of Rural Development. Building the splash pad and renovating the bath house and pavilion will cost $250,000."
The city pool is now open but work on the splash pad has not yet begun.
Plans for the splash pad are to use the existing pool and pool area and add a 40 X 50 foot splash pad to create a swim park. The city received approval for a $125,000 50-50 matching grant for the park earlier this year from the Arkansas Parks and Tourism Outdoor Grant Program. Donations and in-kind labor by city employees are allowed to be used to match the grant.
Don and Fran Cavenaugh donated a $32,000 Camaro through Cavenaugh Auto Group to the Kiwanis Club. Kiwanians then sold $100 tickets to the public for a chance to win the vehicle. They will be donating the money raised through ticket sales to help match the Parks and Tourism grant.
