Ella Brooke Evans

Shane and Amanda Evans of Pocahontas have announced the birth of a child, a daughter, born April 28, 2013, at NEA Baptist Memorial Hospital in Jonesboro.

The baby weighed seven pounds, 15 ounces, and has been named Ella Brooke Evans. She has one sister, Ava Claire Evans, 15 months.

Grandparents are Ronnie and Kathy Evans of Lynn, Brenda Propst of Black Rock and Dale Reid of Pocahontas.

Great-grandparents are Nellie Lyle of Cambria, Ill., Bonnie Reid of Blytheville and Beatrice Allen of Hoxie.

Torie Isabella Warren

Derek and Amber Warren of Paragould have announced the birth of a daughter, born April 20, 2013, at St. Bernard's Birthcare Center in Jonesboro.

The baby weighed four pounds, 12 ounces, and has been named Torie Isabella Warren.

Grandparents are Jessie and Wendy Warren of Jonesboro and Debra Brown of Walnut Ridge. Great-grandparents are Marlon and Helen Cambron of Jonesboro.

Forehand ~ Forehand

Ashley Eugenia Segraves-Forehand and Paul Britton Forehand Jr. have announced their engagement and forthcoming marriage.

The bride-elect is the daughter of Angela Segraves of Hoxie and Douglas Abbott of Thayer, Mo., and the prospective groom is the son of Paula Busby of Needham, Ala., and Paul B. Forehand Sr. of Hoxie.

Ashley is the granddaughter of Ann and Raymond Church of Swifton, Lavelle and Maureen Segraves of Walnut Ridge and the late Lea Dawson and Charles Abbott.

She is a Hoxie High School graduate and attended Black River Technical College. She is a photographer.

Paul is the grandson of the late Sonny Man McIlwain, Mary Ann McIlwain, Garrison Ardelle and Eldridge Forehand.

He is a graduate of Vancleave High School and attended Arkansas State University at Newport. He is a driver for Western Express.

The couple will exchange vows on Saturday at 11 a.m. at Stewart Park in Walnut Ridge. All family and friends are invited to the semi-formal ceremony and the reception to follow at the Van Atkins building on Main Street in Walnut Ridge.

Deborah Barber

Deborah Simmons Barber, 49, of Alicia, died May 4, 2013, at St. Bernards in Jonesboro.

Born Jan. 19, 1964, in Walnut Ridge, she had lived in Illinois most of her life before moving back to Lawrence County in 2009. She was a homemaker and a member of the Faith People's Tabernacle in Hoxie.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Clead and Roberta Hammons Simmons; a sister, Norma Gosha; and a brother, Melvin "Bub" Simmons.

Survivors include her husband, Russell Barber; three sons, Casey Simmons and wife Lindsay, Hoxie, Michael Koenig, Poplar Grove, Ill., and Joseph Koenig, Rockford, Ill.; a stepson, Russell Barber II, Slidell, La.; five brothers, Cleo Simmons, Alicia, John Simmons and wife Dawn, Independence, Kan., Terry Simmons, Hoxie, Jerry Simmons and wife Dilene, Kirkland, Ill., and Glenn Simmons and wife Jenny, Puxico, Mo.; seven sisters, Melba Verke and husband Kevin and Kathy Burchfield and husband Jerry, all of Alicia, Mary Armstrong and husband Gary, Hoxie, Ruth Howard and husband Joe, Swifton, Fredia Ward and husband James, Walnut Ridge, Beck Godwin and husband James, Dyess, and Lois McCoy and husband Randy, Rockford, Ill.; and two grandchildren, Cheyenne Simmons and Brooksdon Simmons.

Funeral was Tuesday at 10 a.m. at the People's Faith Tabernacle in Hoxie with Roger Brand officiating. Burial was in Markham Cemetery under the direction of House-Gregg Funeral Home.

Pallbearers were Kipp Koenig, Casey Simmons, Michael Koenig, Joseph Koenig, Jamie Davidson and Stacey Davidson.

Clyde W. Galbreath

Clyde W. Galbreath, 72, of Walnut Ridge, died May 1, 2013, at the Flo and Phil Jones Hospice House in Jonesboro.

Born Aug. 25, 1940, in Alicia, he was a former employee of the City of Walnut Ridge and was of the Jehovah's Witness belief.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Claudie and Minnie Mae Smith Galbreath; a daughter, two sons, two sisters and a brother.

Survivors include his wife, Janet Seaton Galbreath, whom he married Nov. 26, 1960; three sons, Donnie Galbreath, Gene Galbreath and Jeff Galbreath, all of Walnut Ridge; a daughter, Elizabeth Horn, Walnut Ridge; a brother, Robert Galbreath, Hoxie; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Burial was in Lawrence Memorial Park under the direction of Bryan Funeral Home.

Charles J. Hickman

Charles J. Hickman, 84, died Saturday, April 20, 2013, in Perryville, Mo. He was born in Black Rock to Frank and Helen Hickman on Jan. 24, 1929, and graduated from BRHS in 1947. He enlisted in the Air Force in 1947 and served during the Korean War.

After his discharge, he worked for Rockford Machine Tool as a journeyman electrician. He graduated from ASU in 1957.

He and Drusilla A. Hartnett were married at the Kishwaukee Baptist Church on Jan. 10, 1954. They moved to the St. Louis area and he worked for McDonnell Aircraft for nine years. In 1967, Charles went to work for the U.S Army as a civilian employee in St. Louis. He worked in data processing and retired in 1987 as a GS-13 Division Chief.

After retirement, they lived in Black Rock, Cape Girardeau, Mo., and Perryville, Mo. In 1999, they moved to Paragould.

He is survived by five sons: Charles, professor at the University of Alabama in Huntsville; James, retired consultant, Washington, D.C. area; Tim, faculty at University of Missouri-Kansas City; Thomas (Vicky) computer systems consultant, St. Louis, and John, TV dish installer, St. Louis, and by Julie Jenkins (Fred), who he considered a daughter-in-law.

He is survived by five grandchildren: Brandon, Jeff, Jeremy, Jessica and Justin; and three great-grandchildren: Benjamin, Lillian and Wendy.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Drusilla, in 2009; his parents Frank and Helen; four brothers, Gene and Jewel Hickman, Joe and John Gallagher; and a sister, Mary E. Arnold.

The body will be cremated and private burial will be in Oak Forest Cemetery in Black Rock.

Memorial services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at House-Gregg Funeral Home in Walnut Ridge with Rev. Jerry W. Smith officiating.

Visitation will be at 10 a.m., prior to the service.

Memorials may be made to either the Arkansas State University scholarship fund or the Fisher House Foundation for veterans.

Eugene McLaughlin

Eugene Franklin McLaughlin, 95, of Black Rock, died May 1, 2013, at Lawrence Hall Nursing Center.

Born March 7, 1918, in Black Rock, he was the son of William Jackson and Minnie Propst McLaughlin. He served during World War II as a Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Air Force, where he was awarded the Medal of Good Conduct. After his service, he worked in the steel and printing industries.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Florence McLaughlin; a son, Dean Franklin McLaughlin; three brothers, Robert McLaughlin, William McLaughlin and Calvin McLaughlin; four sisters, Marie Willett, Mabel Hanshaw, Geneva Girard and an infant sister.

Survivors include two stepsons, Terry Marshman and David Marshman, both of California; a stepdaughter, Beverly Marshman, California; and several step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.

Burial will be in Ronan Cemetery in Montana.

Lena Reaves Meadows

Lena Reaves Meadows, 92, of Deerfield Beach, Fla., formerly of Lawrence County, died May 5, 2013, after a brief illness.

Born May 14, 1920, near Augusta, she was the daughter of Willie and Donnie Harville Smith.

Survivors include two daughters, Bonnie Farley, Dothan, Ala., and Carla Reaves McAuliffe, Deerfield Beach, Fla.; a son, James Paul Reaves Jr., Alexandria, Va.; nine grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral is Satuday at 1 p.m. at Bryan Funeral Home with Bro. James Reaves officiating. Burial will be in Ward Cemetery at Strawberry.

Pallbearers will be Justin Reaves, Michael McAuliffe, Kyle McAuliffe, Paul Pizon, Charles Hoots and Lonnie Hurt.

Visitation is Friday from 6-8 p.m.

Memorials may be made to St. Bernard's Senior Citizen Center in Jonesboro.

J.C. Smith

J.C. Smith, 95, of Walnut Ridge, died April 23, 2013, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

Born Sept. 7, 1917, at Walnut Ridge, he was the son of Jessie W. and Effie Mae Waddell Smith. He was a grocery salesman and a member of Fellowship Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by a son, Dwight Stephen Smith; four brothers, Lee Smith, Lirla Smith, Calvin Smith and Harla Smith; and four sisters, Corean Swan, Anna Lou Weir, Opal Miller and Geneva Frazier.

Survivors include his wife, Vivian Moore Smith, whom he married Oct. 5, 1940; three daughters, Linda Richey and husband Cloyce, Walnut Ridge, Brenda Fullen, Paragould, and Tammy Oliver, Ward; six grandchildren, Mark Richey, Jason Brent Richey, Britney Holder Maxwell, Chad Holder, Eric Holder and Briana Griffin; and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral was Thursday, April 25, at 2 p.m. at Bryan Funeral Home with Bro. Joel McMasters officiating. Burial was in Lawrence Memorial Park.

Pallbearers were Eric Holder, Chad Holder, Mark Richey, Danny Andrews, Ronnie Smith and Charles Helms.

Alma Wheeler

Alma Jean Huskey Wheeler, 81, of Swifton, died May 2, 2013.

Born Nov. 22, 1931, at Swifton, she was the daughter of Mack and Minnie O'Banion Huskey. She was retired from the Pinedale Nursing Home food service department and was a member of the Swifton Assembly of God Church.

She was preceded in death by four brothers, Ralph Huskey, Willard Huskey, Roy Huskey and James Walter Huskey.

Survivors include a son, Cliff Gene Bradley and wife Stephanie, Yuma, Ariz.; a brother, Claude Huskey and wife Lois, Walnut Ridge; two grandchildren, Eric Gene Bradley and Douglas Allen Bradley; and seven great-grandchildren.

Graveside service is today at noon at Swifton Cemetery with Bro. Mark Duncan officiating. Jackson's Newport Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
