Sign dedicated at Watson Field
A new sign has been installed welcoming visitors to the Bobby C. Watson Little League Field at Stewart Park. The sign was dedicated during the April 15 opening night ceremony of the Little League season.
Brad Flippo, president of the Little League Board, said he contacted Andrea Allen about raising funds for a new sign. In a very short time, Allen said more than enough money was raised to cover the cost of the sign.
Judy Watson, Bobby Watson's daughter, spoke during the ceremony, and Coach Watson's wife, Maryann, was present for the dedication, but Coach Watson was unable to attend.
Judy Watson, read the following statement:
"On behalf of our family, I would like to thank the many people who contributed to this dedication to my father. A special thank you to Brad Flippo, Andrea Allen and Doyne Davis for their efforts and time spent in coordinating this tribute.
"For 20 years, my father spent his summers on this little league field. He never thought of the baseball program as a job but as an opportunity to work with the youth of Northeast Arkansas.
"Not only did he coach the boys in the fundamentals of baseball, but he also taught life lessons.
"He believed each player was special and he took the time to calculate each and every player's batting average. When he wrote the games up for The Times Dispatch, he wanted to give recognition to the Little Leaguers as if they were major leaguers.
"In addition, he was proud to watch each player improve and grow as an individual.
"I'll never forget that the ballpark was the summer home for the whole Watson family.
"We will always cherish the memories and the friends made here.
"Again, we appreciate each and every one of you for this honor that you have given my father, Coach Bobby C. Watson."
