Bobcats are county champions
The Walnut Ridge Bobcats defeated Hillcrest 12-0 in the championship game of the 2013 Lawrence County Baseball Tournament on Saturday at Stewart Park.
Walnut Ridge starting pitcher Layne Ditto struck out 10 of the 14 batters he faced in the four-inning contest. He allowed one hit and walked one.
The Bobcats scored one run in the first inning, five runs in the second inning, four in the third and two in the fourth.
Cash Lee, Hunter Flippo, Zach Crisler, Range Weeks, Eric Wilcoxson, Payton Poole and Baron Estes each had one hit for Walnut Ridge.
Lee and Weeks each had two RBIs and scored two runs. Crisler and Wilcoxson each had two RBIs and scored a run. Cole Hicks had an RBI. Flippo, Poole, Lane Kennedy and Ryan Vaughn each scored a run.
Walnut Ridge needed just three innings to defeat Sloan-Hendrix 15-0 in one semifinal contest.
The Bobcats broke out of the gates quickly, scoring nine runs in the bottom of the first inning and adding three runs in each of the next two innings.
Flippo pitched for Walnut Ridge and allowed just one hit while striking out six.
Flippo also keyed the Bobcats' offense, going 2-for-2 with two RBIs and scoring three runs. Wilcoxson had two hits and three RBIs, and Lee had one hit and drove in a pair of runs. Hicks had a hit, an RBI and scored two runs, and Kennedy added two hits. Weeks had an RBI and scored two runs, and Poole had an RBI and scored a run.
Hillcrest rallied from a 5-0 deficit to defeat Hoxie 15-5 in the other semifinal matchup.
Sloan-Hendrix earned its spot in the semifinals by defeating Black Rock 12-2 in the tournament's opening game on Friday.
Zeb Gipson tossed a one-hitter to pick up the pitching win. He also struck out six Zebra batters.
Dylan Newell and Chris Taylor each went 3-for-3 and drove in two runs apiece for the Greyhounds.
