Bobcats fall to Poplar
Bluff, defeat Salem

The Poplar Bluff Mules needed an extra inning to defeat Walnut Ridge 6-2 in high school baseball action on March 27 at Stewart Park

After three scoreless innings, the Mules broke on top with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth inning, only to see the Bobcats tie the contest with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning.

The game remained deadlocked until Poplar Bluff scored four runs in the top of the eighth inning, then held the Cats scoreless in the bottom of the eighth to take the win.

Payton Poole and Lane Kennedy each had one hit and an RBI for Walnut Ridge. Hunter Flippo, Range Weeks and Eric Wilcoxson each had two hits. Flippo and Poole scored the Bobcats' runs.

Baron Estes turned in a strong pitching performance for the Bobcats, allowing four earned runs on eight hits. He recorded eight strikeouts and two walks in seven and two-thirds innings of work. Weeks came on in relief and got the final out.


Walnut Ridge defeated 2A-2 Conference opponent Salem 6-5 at Stewart Park on March 26.

Salem scored two runs in the first inning, but the Bobcats tied the game with single runs in the second and fourth innings. The Greyhounds regained the advantage at 5-2 with three runs in the fifth. Walnut Ridge trimmed the lead to 5-3 with a run in the bottom of the inning.

Salem threatened in the top of the sixth, with a runner at first and only one out. Layne Ditto entered the game and retired two batters to get the Bobcats out of the inning.

Walnut Ridge rallied with three runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 6-5 lead.

Ditto returned to the mound in the seventh inning and retired the Greyhounds on an infield popup and two strikeouts.

Wilcoxon went 2-for-4, with a double and scored a run. Weeks was 1-for-3 with two RBIs and scored a run. Cash Lee had one RBI. Flippo, Crisler, Ditto, Poole and Kennedy each contributed one hit.

Starter Ryan Vaughn pitched five and one-third innings and allowed two earned runs on five hits and registered six strikeouts.
