WR receives $520,000
state grant for paving
The city of Walnut Ridge has received a $520,000 grant from the Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department.
According to Walnut Ridge Mayor Don House, the grant was one of 11 distributed in the state and was the largest award received.
Highway engineers from the AHTD visited Walnut Ridge in early February and reviewed the streets that met the criteria of the state guidelines, which were submitted to the State Committee that granted the award. The grant funds will be used to pave city roads that connect two highways, House explained
"We were the third in the state to submit an application. We knew we had a good application but we were surprised at the amount awarded," said House.
The grant will allow the city to repave several roads including Pocahontas Road, .77 miles; Midway Road, .50 miles; Luther Bridges Road, 1.18 miles; Free Street from Hwy. 412 to Hwy. 91, 1.26 miles; and Southwest Sixth Street, between Free Street and Southern Avenue.
