Hillcrest teams compete at state
The Hillcrest boys and girls senior high basketball teams made the long trip to Bradley to compete in the 1A State Tournament last week.
Twenty-four hours after winning the regional tournament on their home floor at Lynn, the Hillcrest boys faced KIPP Delta in a first-round contest. The game was close in the first half, with the Screamin' Eagles leading 17-14 after the first quarter and 30-25 at the intermission.
Hillcrest began to pull away in the second half, stretching the lead to 48-35 after three quarters en route to a 64-50 win. KIPP had no answer for Colman Evans, who finished with 43 points and 11 rebounds for the Eagles.
The victory sent Hillcrest into a second-round matchup with the host Bradley Bears. Bradley led in the early going, 11-8 after one quarter and 27-23 at halftime. Hillcrest stormed back in the third quarter, outscoring the Bears 21-12 to lead 44-39 heading into the fourth quarter.
The Eagles extended their lead to seven points, 48-41, before an 11-6 run by Bradley cut Hillcrest's advantage to 54-52. Bradley converted a steal into a basket to regain the lead at 59-58 with 1:10 to play. The Bears hit their free-throws in the final minute to secure the 64-61 victory.
Zach Doyle led Hillcrest with 29 points, while Evans added 16 points. Jeremiah Turner finished with eight points and seven rebounds.
The Eagles end the season with a 30-7 record. They won the Williams Baptist College Invitational, the Lawrence County Tournament and the 1A Region 2 tournament.
Hillcrest's Lady Screamin' Eagles fell to the Wonderview Lady Daredevils 59-47 in the first round on Feb. 27.
Wonderview led 11-9 after one quarter, 29-20 at halftime and 56-26 after three quarters.
Lindsey Crews led the Lady Eagles with 16 points and four steals. Shea Durham contributed 11 points and 10 rebounds, and Stacy Maxwell added nine points.
The Hillcrest girls end the season with a record of 18-14 and won the 1A-2 North District Tournament.
