The Hillcrest boys and girls senior high basketball teams made the long trip to Bradley to compete in the 1A State Tournament last week.

Boys

Twenty-four hours after winning the regional tournament on their home floor at Lynn, the Hillcrest boys faced KIPP Delta in a first-round contest. The game was close in the first half, with the Screamin' Eagles leading 17-14 after the first quarter and 30-25 at the intermission.

Hillcrest began to pull away in the second half, stretching the lead to 48-35 after three quarters en route to a 64-50 win. KIPP had no answer for Colman Evans, who finished with 43 points and 11 rebounds for the Eagles.

The victory sent Hillcrest into a second-round matchup with the host Bradley Bears. Bradley led in the early going, 11-8 after one quarter and 27-23 at halftime. Hillcrest stormed back in the third quarter, outscoring the Bears 21-12 to lead 44-39 heading into the fourth quarter.

The Eagles extended their lead to seven points, 48-41, before an 11-6 run by Bradley cut Hillcrest's advantage to 54-52. Bradley converted a steal into a basket to regain the lead at 59-58 with 1:10 to play. The Bears hit their free-throws in the final minute to secure the 64-61 victory.

Zach Doyle led Hillcrest with 29 points, while Evans added 16 points. Jeremiah Turner finished with eight points and seven rebounds.

The Eagles end the season with a 30-7 record. They won the Williams Baptist College Invitational, the Lawrence County Tournament and the 1A Region 2 tournament.

Girls

Hillcrest's Lady Screamin' Eagles fell to the Wonderview Lady Daredevils 59-47 in the first round on Feb. 27.

Wonderview led 11-9 after one quarter, 29-20 at halftime and 56-26 after three quarters.

Lindsey Crews led the Lady Eagles with 16 points and four steals. Shea Durham contributed 11 points and 10 rebounds, and Stacy Maxwell added nine points.
