Walnut Ridge High School senior Eric Wilcoxson has now ensured his prospects of continuing his baseball career beyond high school. He has signed a letter of intent and athletic scholarship agreement to play baseball for the Raiders of Three Rivers Community College in Poplar Bluff, Mo.
Wilcoxson has been a top athletic in football, basketball and baseball while at WRHS. He is the second Bobcat senior signing to play college baseball.
"I'd like to thank the coaches at Three Rivers, here (at WRHS) and my family," said Wilcoxson at the signing event last Wednesday.
He said the likelihood of seeing playing time as a freshman is one factor that drew him to sign with the college. He said the location and the fact that he has family members (an aunt and uncle) there were also factors.
"It's a great atmosphere there," he added.
Joe Scarano, assistant baseball coach at Three Rivers, stated on the Three Rivers website, "Eric is a very versatile athlete who can do a lot of things well on the baseball field. Eric is a very good runner, has a strong and balanced swing and can move very well defensively. Eric has excelled in three sports, and you can see how the skills from each sport's training have blended into Eric's baseball game. We are graduating four infielders, and Eric is a key recruit moving forward."
Derek Bramlett, WRHS baseball coach, still has one season left with Wilcoxson and has high expectations for this year's team. Most of his players, including a large group of talented seniors, are returning.
"Eric is the kind of kid every coach wants on his team," Bramlett said. "He works as hard as he can every day at practice or in a game. He is very respectful of his coaches, teammates, opponents and umpires."
Wilcoxson plays shortstop for the Bobcats and has also done some pitching.
He made All-Conference the past three years and All-State last year, as well as having other honors, such as making The Jonesboro Sun's "Best Under the Sun" team.
During the 2012 summer, Wilcoxson played American Legion Baseball on the Paragould 7-Up Team.
