WR boys are district runners-up
Nathan Hibbard The senior high basketball teams from Walnut Ridge and Sloan-Hendrix competed in the 2A-2 District Tournament last week at Pangburn.
Cedar Ridge defeated Walnut Ridge 65-49 in the boys final on Saturday. Zach Crisler had 25 points to lead Walnut Ridge. Walnut Ridge will play in the 2A-North Regional Tournament, hosted by Sloan-Hendrix in Imboden. The Bobcats will face Marked Tree at 8:30 p.m. on Thursday.
The Walnut Ridge boys, conference runners-up in regular season, received a bye until Friday's semifinals, when they faced the Tuckerman Bulldogs. The Bobcats advanced to the finals with a 68-52 win over the Bulldogs. Crisler recorded a double-double for the Bobcats, with 20 points and 12 rebounds. It was a one-point game at halftime, with the Bobcats leading 26-25. Walnut Ridge began to take charge after the intermission behind Crisler, who did not score in the first two quarters. The Bobcats opened up a 44-37 lead after three periods and continued to pull away in the fourth. Matt Cox finished with 14 points, and Range Weeks added 12 for Walnut Ridge. In girls semifinal action, Walnut Ridge's Lady Bobcats fell to Cedar Ridge 61-31. Caroline Kelley led the Lady Cats with 12 points.
A berth in the regional tournament was on the line when the Walnut Ridge and Sloan-Hendrix girls squared off in a second-round game on Feb. 12. Walnut Ridge led 44-37 entering the fourth quarter and secured the win with clutch free-throw shooting. The Lady Bobcats were successful on 22-of-25 foul shots in the game. Allyson McQuay was six-of-six from the charity stripe in the final period and finished with 18 points. Anna Bland also scored 18 points. Caroline Kelley and Hannah Massey each had 12 points. Ashley Ward led Sloan-Hendrix with 18 points. Madicyn Huddleston had 15 points, and Shayla Dickson added 14. The win secured a spot in the 2A-North Regional Tournament for Walnut Ridge. The Lady Bobcats will play Marmaduke tonight at 7 p.m. at the Bill McCurley Gymnasium in Imboden.
Walnut Ridge's girls opened the tournament with a 66-40 win over Cotter on Feb. 11. The Lady Cats, who led 15-11 after one quarter, took control of the contest in the second period, stretching the lead to 28-15 at halftime and 44-24 entering the fourth quarter. Kelley led Walnut Ridge with 17 points. Massey scored 14 points, and Bland added 12. In the boys bracket, the Sloan-Hendrix Greyhounds fell to Cotter 62-55.
