WR junior girls are champions
Nathan Hibbard The Walnut Ridge junior girls defeated Sloan-Hendrix 36-33 in the junior girls final of the Lawrence County Basketball Tournament Saturday at Hoxie Mustang Gymnasium. Sloan-Hendrix jumped out to a 12-6 first-quarter advantage and continued to lead at halftime, 18-14. Walnut Ridge came on strong in the third quarter, outscoring the Lady Greyhounds 12-2 in the period to move into a 26-20 lead entering the fourth quarter. Sloan-Hendrix closed the gap in the final period, but the Lady Bobcats were able to hold on to take the win. Brianna Nunley had 14 points, and Whitney Rider added 10 points for Walnut Ridge. Sunnie Cunningham and Baylee Burris had four points apiece, while Maggie Jackson and Malorie Moore each had two points. Alyssa Nichols scored a game-high 15 points for Sloan-Hendrix. Madison Luffman had eight points. Jessie Powell finished with six points, and Brittany Gosha added four points.
