LawCo. Teams compete
in NEA Tournament

The Walnut Ridge boys and girls teams, and the Sloan-Hendrix girls, advanced to the second round of the Northeast Arkansas Invitational Basketball Tournament in Jonesboro recently, while three other Lawrence County teams lost their first-round matchups.

Second round
S-H - Weiner girls

After ousting Black Rock in the opening round, the Sloan-Hendrix Lady Greyhounds fell to Weiner 64-46 on Dec. 22.

Weiner led 15-13 after a close first quarter. The Lady Cardinals pushed the lead to 27-15 in the second quarter before the Lady Hounds rallied to close the gap to 29-23 at halftime.

Weiner again threatened to pull away in the third quarter, opening up a 15-point advantage at 39-24. Sloan-Hendrix fought back to trail by only 10 at the end of the third period, 39-29. The Lady Greyhounds closed the deficit to single digits with less than four minutes to play at 49-41, but Weiner ended the game on a 15-5 run to seal the victory.

Madicyn Huddleston led Sloan-Hendrix with 14 points, while Shayla Dickson finished with 13. Cheyenne Vance scored 10 points.

WR - Marked Tree girls

Walnut Ridge's Lady Bobcats fell to Marked Tree 62-47 in second-round action on Friday.

The Lady Indians jumped out to an early 11-3 advantage before the Lady Cats closed the gap to 13-9 at the end of the first period. After Marked Tree pushed the lead to 22-11 early in the second quarter, Walnut Ridge outscored the Lady Indians 15-6 over the remainder of the period and trailed only 28-26 at halftime.

The teams swapped the lead early in the third quarter, but a late 10-0 run gave the Lady Indians a 45-37 lead after three quarters.

Marked Tree's defense caused Walnut Ridge problems in the fourth quarter, forcing five turnovers and holding the Lady Cats to just one field goal, allowing the Lady Indians to pull away for the victory.

Hannah Massey led Walnut Ridge with 13 points, and Audrey McElrath finished with 10 points. Holly Looney had 10 rebounds.

WR - Bay boys

A 21-2 run by Bay in the second quarter proved to be the difference, as the top-seeded Yellowjackets eliminated Walnut Ridge 72-51 on Dec. 22.

With the Bobcats leading 21-20 midway through the second period, the Yellowjackets took command of the contest and raced to a 41-23 halftime lead.

Bay extended its lead to 62-40 at the end of the third quarter, and both teams emptied their benches in the final period.

Zach Crisler led Walnut Ridge with 18 points. Matt Cox had 10 points, and Hunter Flippo added nine.

First round
S-H - BR girls

Sloan-Hendrix squared off against Black Rock in a first-round game in the girls' bracket on Dec. 20.

Sloan-Hendrix led just 11-10 after one quarter, but outscored the Lady Zebras 40-13 over the next two periods to pull away for a 60-41 win.

Britney Wolfe hit six three-pointer for the Lady Greyhounds and finished with a game-high 22 points. Huddleston had 17 points and 10 rebounds.

Christian Ervin led Black Rock with 15 points and seven rebounds.

BR - Augusta boys

The Augusta Red Devils dominated the second half to down Black Rock 65-43 on Dec. 21.

The contest was tied 23-23 at halftime, but Augusta outscored the Zebras 42-20 in the second half to earn the victory.

Matt Wilkens led the Zebras with 25 points and seven rebounds.

WR - ICC girls

The Walnut Ridge girls jumped to a big early lead against Izard County Consolidated and coasted to a 52-40 first-round victory.

The Lady Bobcats led 12-5 after one quarter, 25-5 at halftime and 40-17 after three quarters.

Walnut Ridge was led by Allyson McQuay, who hit three three-points and finished with 13 points. Caroline Kelley, Tiye Flowers and McElrath each had eight points.

WR - Weiner boys

Walnut Ridge edged Weiner 58-52 on Dec. 21 to advance to the tournament's second round.

The Bobcats led 12-11 after the first quarter, but trailed 23-21 at the half and 40-39 at the end of the third quarter. Walnut Ridge rallied in the final quarter, outscoring the Cardinals 19-12 in the period to take the win.

Crisler led Walnut Ridge with 20 points, including 12 in the fourth quarter. Matt Cox had 11 points, and Flippo added 10.

S-H - Marked Tree boys

The Marked Tree Indians defeated Sloan-Hendrix 60-33 in a first-round matchup on Dec. 20.
