Hoxie posts homecoming victory

The Hoxie boys basketball teams were in action against 3A-3 Conference opponents Corning and Rivercrest last week.

Corning

The Mustangs hosted Corning for homecoming on Friday and defeated the Bobcats 66-40.

Hoxie led just 33-26 at halftime, but dominated the second half, outscoring Corning 19-6 in the third period and 24-8 in the fourth quarter to coast to the victory.

Jacob Defries led Hoxie in scoring, with 20 points. Colton Watson finished with 14 points, and Hayden Defries added 10. Slade Sullens and Noah Adamson had six points apiece, and Jake Ellis added five points.

The Hoxie junior high boys defeated Corning 36-30.

The junior Mustangs led 9-7 after one quarter, 19-15 at halftime and 28-17 after three periods.

Tanner Sullens led Hoxie with 10 points. Alex Carpenter had nine points, and Lucas Willfond added seven. Dylan Littlejohn finished with six points, while James Johnson and Paul Adamson each had two points.

Corning won a seventh-grade boys game 33-18.

Corning led 6-3 at the end of the first quarter, 15-6 at halftime and 25-13 entering the fourth quarter.

Gunner Rice led Hoxie with six points. Brock Jones scored five points, and Diamani Davis had three. Chance Moore and Landon Durham finished with two points apiece.

Rivercrest

The Hoxie boys traveled to Wilson on Dec. 4 to face the Rivercrest Colts. The senior high and junior high games each went down to the final shot, with the teams splitting the two contests.

In the senior high game, Rivercrest jumped out to an 18-10 lead after one quarter before Hoxie battled back to cut the Colts' lead to 33-31 at halftime. The Mustangs continued their strong play in the second half and led 48-46 after three periods and held on in the final quarter for a 67-66 victory.

Watson led Hoxie with 20 points. Seth Hart finished with 15 points on five three-pointers, and Slade Sullens also had 15 points. Jacob Defries had 14 points, and Noah Adamson added six points.

The Rivercrest junior high boys scored a basket as time expired to edge Hoxie 36-34.

Hoxie trailed 7-6 after a quarter, but overtook the Colts in the second period to lead 17-13 at halftime. The junior Mustangs continued to lead after three quarters, 27-25, before Rivercrest rallied in the final quarter to take the win.

Tanner Sullens led Hoxie with 12 points, and Littlejohn added seven. Johnson and Brody Raby had six points apiece, and Willfond scored three points.
