Bids to be opened
on BR bridge

Gretchen Hunt

The Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department is moving forward with preparations for the replacement of the Highway 63 bridge over Black River at Black Rock.

Bids on the construction of the new bridge are scheduled to be opened today. The multi-million-dollar project is expected to take approximately two years to complete.

Construction of a new bridge, which is part of a larger project to four-lane Highway 63, was fast tracked after an inspection resulted in new weight limits being placed on the bridge in 2011.

The weight limit for five-axle trucks was reduced to 33 tons from the standard limit of 40 tons.

In addition to taking bids on construction, the AHTD has also begun purchasing property to make way for the bridge, which will be located approximately 15 feet south of the current bridge.
