Hoxie's season ends with loss

Hoxie quarterback Cole Sears sprints to the goal line after breaking a Lamar tackle during the Mustangs' 21-18 state playoff loss on Friday night. Sears recorded 95 yards rushing, including two touchdown runs.

The Hoxie Mustangs' football season came to an end with a hard-fought 21-18 loss to the Lamar Warriors in the first round of the 3A State Playoffs Friday night at Lamar.

The teams battled through a scoreless first quarter before the Mustangs put up the only points of the first half on Cole Sears' 15-yard run with seven minutes remaining in the second period. Lamar stopped Hoxie on the two-point conversion attempt and the Mustangs took a 6-0 lead into halftime.

Lamar's defense came up with a big play to start the second half. The Warriors' Shane Sinor scooped up a Hoxie fumble and returned it for a touchdown to tie the game at 6-6. Jordan Haas kicked the extra point to give Lamar a 7-6 lead with eight minutes to play in the third quarter.

The Hillcrest Lady Screamin' Eagles defeated Hoxie 57-53 in senior girls basketball action Tuesday at Hoxie, despite a 31-point performance by the Lady Mustangs' Brandi Alls.
