Hoxie earns 48-27
win over Piggott
Hoxie raced out to a 34-0 first-half lead and went on to defeat the Piggott Mohawks 48-27 in 3A-3 football action Friday night at Crider Field.
Quarterback Cole Sears accounted for three touchdowns in the first quarter to get the Mustangs off to a fast start. Sears passed 56 yards to Jacob Henson on Hoxie's first possession, and later connected with Slade Sullens on a 27-yard score.
Sears ran 31 yards for the Mustangs' next score, and Brett Nosser raced 75 yards for Hoxie's fourth touchdown of the opening period.
Hoxie added to their lead when Colton Brown scored on a one-yard run with 2:38 to play in the half.
Piggott scored a touchdown and a two-point conversion late in the half to cut Hoxie's halftime lead to 34-8.
The Mohawks continued to whittle away at the Mustangs' lead with two touchdowns in the third quarter to close to within 34-20 heading into the final period.
Brown scored on a 15-yard run midway through the fourth quarter to push Hoxie's lead to 40-20.
Piggott added a touchdown and PAT to make the score 40-27.
Brown scored his third touchdown of the night with 2:45 to play, and ran in the two-point conversion for the game's final points.
Henson led the Mustangs' rushing attack with 118 yards on 17 carries. Gunner Cook added 96 yards on 17 carries, and Nosser finished with 87 yards and a touchdown on three rushes. Sears carried seven times for 80 yards and a touchdown. Brown finished with 58 yards and three touchdowns on eight attempts.
Sears completed two-of-three passes for 83 yards and two touchdowns.
Hoxie now stands at 3-3 in conference play and 5-3 overall. The Mustangs conclude the regular season at Harrisburg on Thursday night. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
Bonfire pep-rally scheduled
Hoxie School will host a pep rally on Nov. 8 beginning at 5:30 p.m. at the Hoxie Football Fieldhouse.
The event will also include a cook out and a bonfire. The event marks the beginning of the AAA State Play-offs, which the Mustangs are preparing for.
