Mustangs claim homecoming win
The Hoxie Mustangs reeled off 34 unanswered points in the second half to break a halftime tie and post a 48-20 homecoming victory over the Corning Bobcats Friday night at Crider Field.
Hoxie broke on top 6-0 on Cole Sears' one-yard quarterback keeper with 3:51 to play in the first quarter.
Corning tied the score at 6-6 on a nine-yard run by Russell Cox later in the period.
Gunner Cook put the Mustangs back on top with a 30-yard run late in the opening quarter. Cook added the two-point conversion for a 14-6 Hoxie lead.
Corning scored the only points of the second quarter on a seven-yard pass from Korey Smith to Trevor Barajas with 5:38 to play. Nathan Oxner ran in the two-point conversion and the teams went into halftime knotted 14-14.
Hoxie regained the lead, 20-14, on Cook's 18-yard run midway through the third quarter. The Mustangs added to their lead on Sears' 13-yard pass to Jacob Henson. Cook's conversion gave Hoxie a 28-14 lead with 4:17 remaining in the period.
Cook scored on a 25-yard run and added the conversion to extend Hoxie's lead to 36-14 with 2:52 to play in the third quarter. He then broke free for an 80-yard touchdown early in the fourth period to put Hoxie on top 42-14.
Sears scored the Mustangs final touchdown on a 23-yard run with 7:34 to play in the game.
Cox added a three-yard touchdown for the Bobcats to set the final score.
Cook rushed for 198 yards and four touchdowns on 18 carries. Sears had 85 yards and two touchdowns on eight attempts. Henson added 20 yards on four carries. Brett Nosser had one carry for nine yards. Never Parker rushed three times for five yards, and Colton Brown had one carry for three yards.
Sears was four-of-nine passing, for 40 yards and one touchdown.
Henson caught two passes for 18 yards and a touchdown. Nosser caught one pass for 16 yards. Slade Sullens had one reception for six yards.
Brown led the Mustangs' defense with 20 tackles and two sacks. Sullens had 12 tackles and an interception. Sears also had an interception.
Hoxie improved to 2-3 in 3A-3 conference play and 4-3 overall. The Mustangs host Piggott for senior night on Friday. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
