Hoxie claims 48-14 win at Manila
The Hoxie Mustangs earned their first 3A-3 conference win of the season with a 48-14 thrashing of the Manila Lions in senior football action Friday night at Manila.
Hoxie's Jacob Henson scored on a 23-yard run on the Mustangs' first possession for a quick 6-0 lead. Gunner Cook added a six-yard scoring run and Henson ran for the two-point conversion to give Hoxie a 14-0 lead with 3:21 to play in the first quarter.
Henson was on the receiving end of a 15-yard touchdown pass from Cole Sears, as the Mustangs pushed the lead to 20-0 early in the second period.
Manila cut Hoxie's lead to 20-8 on a 14-yard run, followed by a two-point conversion, with 4:19 to play in the first half.
Hoxie answered shortly before halftime when Cook scored from 17 yards out. Sears passed to Slade Sullens for the conversion to give the Mustangs a 28-8 advantage heading into the break.
Hoxie put the game out of reach in the third quarter on pair of four-yard runs by Gunner Cook. Sears kicked the extra point after the first score to stretch the Mustangs' lead to 35-8 with 7:43 to play in the period. Cook's fourth touchdown run came with 2:06 remaining in the quarter' and gave Hoxie a 41-8 lead after three periods.
A 70-yard run by Manila made the score 41-14 with 5:29 to play in the game.
Henson scored his third touchdown of the evening on a 30-yard run with 1:49 to play. Sears added the PAT for the game's final point.
Sears completed four-of-six passes, for 69 yards and a touchdown.
Henson led the Mustangs' ground game with 144 yards and two touchdowns on nine attempts. Cook rushed for 98 yards and four touchdowns on 16 carries. Sears added 99 yards on nine carries.
On defense, Colton Brown led the way with 13 tackles, while Conner Roberts recorded 12 stops.
Hoxie improved to 1-3 in conference play and 3-3 overall. The Mustangs will host Corning for homecoming on Friday night. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
