Hoxie beats Harrisburg,
drops match to CRA
The Hoxie senior high volleyball team split a pair of matches in 3A-Northeast Conference play last week. The junior high team won its matches in conference play and made a good showing in the NEA Blazer Blast.
The Lady Mustangs traveled to Harrisburg and posted a four-set win over the Lady Hornets, 25-22, 22-25, 25-20, 25-16.
Sarah Manis was nine-of-10 serving, with an ace, 20 assists, a dig and a kill. Courtney Sears had 17 digs, three blocks and nine kills. Krista Coffell had five digs, two blocks and 12 kills. Maddison Woodard was eight-of-nine serving, with an ace, three assists, two digs and eight kills. Maria Fry had five digs and three kills. Grace Hall had an assist, a block and seven kills. Zoe Willfond had nine assists, and Emily Hatfield had three digs.
The junior high match went three games, with Hoxie coming out on top 25-19, 25-27, 25-7.
Sequoia Irvin was eight-of-eight from the line, with five digs, a block and eight kills. Danielle Maronde went eight-of-nine from the line and had a dig and three kills. Krista VanKirk was eight-of-eight serving, with two aces, 13 assists and three kills. Katelyn Jameson was seven-of-eight serving, with an ace. Kelsey Moody went nine-of-10 from the line, with two aces, and Brooke Willfond had an ace, three digs and two kills.
Hoxie played a tough four-set match against Crowley's Ridge Academy, falling to the Lady Falcons 21-25, 25-22, 20-25, 23-25 on Oct. 2 at Hicks Gymnasium.
Manis was 12-of-14 serving, with an ace, 25 assists, three digs and seven kills. Sears was nine-of-nine from the line, with an ace, 15 digs, three blocks and nine kills. Coffell had four digs and 13 kills. Woodard finished with two assists, three digs, two blocks and seven kills. Fry had 13 digs, a block and three kills. Hall had an assist, two digs and seven kills. Emily Hatfield added 11 digs, and Zoe Willfond had 10 assists and two digs.
The junior Lady Mustangs defeated CRA 26-24, 25-18.
VanKirk had five assists and five kills. Irvin had two digs and eight kills, and Maronde had four digs. Jamison was seven-of-seven serving, with seven digs and a kill. Brooke Willfond had four digs and three kills, and Moody finished with six assists and two kills.
NEA Blazer Blast
Hoxie's junior high volleyball team competed in the NEA Blazer Blast tournament on Friday and Saturday at Valley View.
The junior Lady Mustangs opened pool play on Friday, dropping a match to Valley View, 14-25, 19-25, and splitting with Greene County Tech, 14-25, 25-24. They finished pool play on Saturday with a split against Paragould, 25-21, 15-25, and a win against Annie Camp, 25-23, 25-24, to finish in third place in their pool.
Hoxie advanced to the gold tournament, where they defeated Piggott in the first round, 23-25, 25-18, 15-8. The Lady Mustangs faced Nettleton in the second round and dropped a hard-fought match 20-25, 24-26.
For the tournament, VanKirk was 53-of-56 serving, with 15 aces, 33 assists, four digs and nine kills. Irvin was 26-of-26 from the line, with six aces, two assists, 20 digs, a block and nine kills. Maronde went 20-of-23 from the line, with three aces, six digs and five kills. Jamison had 21 digs, 11 kills and four aces. Moody had five assists, two digs and two kills. Brooke Willfond was 11-of-14 serving, with two aces, 24 digs and nine kills. Cheyenne Hatfield was 13-of-13 serving, with three aces, 13 assists, six digs and 10 kills.
