A 21-point fourth quarter lifted the Rivercrest Colts to 31-12 victory over Hoxie in 3A-3 Conference football action on Friday night at Crider Field.
Defense dominated the first half of the game, with the only points coming on a 26-yard field goal by Rivercrest's Corbin Smith late in the opening period.
Special teams continued to provide the scoring after the halftime break. Hoxie's Brett Nosser returned the second-half kickoff 96 yards for a touchdown to give the Mustangs a 6-3 lead.
Rivercrest answered quickly, when Tim Talley returned the ensuing kickoff 88 yards for a score. Smith's PAT put the Colts' back in front 10-6 early in the third quarter.
That score would stand until early in the fourth quarter, when the Mustangs's defense turned in a big play. Linebacker Colton Brown picked off a Colt pass and returned in
55 yards to set up Hoxie's next score. Gunner Cook capped the ensuing drive with a six-yard run to give the Mustangs a 12-10 lead with 10:08 to play in the game.
Rivercrest took less than a minute to respond, as Chris Parker scored on a 24-yard run to put the Colts in the lead for good at 16-12. Phillip Porter ran in the two-point conversion to make it 18-12 with 9:20 remaining.
The Colts added another quick score on Clayton Carlton's one-yard run, extending the Rivercrest lead to 24-12 with 8:31 left in the game.
Talley bolted 51 yards for a touchdown with 2:39 to play, pushing the Colts's lead to 30-12. Smith's PAT set the final score.
Hoxie's record now stands at 2-2 overall and 0-2 in 3A-3 Conference play. The Mustangs travel to Earle on Friday. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
