Lady Mustangs beat Walnut Ridge
The Hoxie Lady Mustangs won a five-set match against 3A-Northeast Conference rival Walnut Ridge on Thursday at Hoxie’s Hicks Gymnasium.
The Lady Mustangs started strong, winning the first game 25-21, then hammering Walnut Ridge 25-13 in the second game.
Walnut Ridge avoided being swept by winning a hard-fought third set 26-24. The Lady Cats carried their momentum into the next game, taking a 25-19 win to even the match at two sets apiece.
Hoxie regrouped and won the fifth game 15-10 to claim the match.
The Lady Mustangs improved to 4-5 in conference play and 7-6 overall. Walnut Ridge fell to 4-5 in the conference and 10-5 overall.
For Hoxie, Sarah Manis was 12-of-12 serving, and had 18 assists, three digs and two kills. Courtney Sears had eight digs, four blocks and 13 kills. Krista Coffell had four digs and seven kills. Maddi Woodard finished with two aces, two digs, a block and six kills. Maria Fry had 12 digs, a block and four kills. Zoe Willfond had 12 assists and a dig. Grace Hall had four kills, and Emily Hatfield had 11 digs.
For Walnut Ridge, Caroline Kelley registered 26 kills. Sabrina Knight was 13-of-13 serving, and had 20 assists. Hannah Massey went 13-of-13 from the service line and had 24 digs. Nikki Pyle had four blocks.
The Walnut Ridge and Hoxie junior high teams played an exciting match, with the Lady Bobcats taking the victory in three sets.
Walnut Ridge won the first set 25-23, while the Lady Mustangs took the second, 25-15. The Lady Cats took the third set 25-17.
For Hoxie, Krista VanKirk had two aces, 12 assists, two digs and five kills. Sequoia Irvin had seven digs, two aces and eight kills. Danielle Maronde and Katelyn Jamison each had eight digs and two kills. Kelsey Moody had seven assists, an ace and a kill. Brooke Willfond had six digs and six kills.
